A new Jackson restaurant and a Jackson chef are in the running for a James Beard Award.Sambou’s African Kitchen on E. County Line Road is a semifinalist in the Best New Restaurant category and Hunter Evans, of Elvie’s, is a semifinalist for the Best Chef in the South.Sambou’s, a family-run restaurant, opened early last year and uses “Gambian culinary methods to deliver a scrumptious menu that excites the senses and delights the palate,” according to its website.James Beard Foundation announces 2023 Restaurant and Chef Awards semifinalistsFor a restaurant to qualify for the category, it must have opened between Jan. 1, 2022, and Sept. 30, 2022, “that already demonstrates excellence in cuisine, atmosphere, hospitality and operations while contributing positively to its broader community.” The new restaurants nominated also seem to make a significant impact in coming years, according to the Beard Awards website.The Best Chef category, for which Evans is in the running, is broken into regions. The South is comprised of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Puerto Rico and Mississippi. The nominated chefs have “set high standards in their culinary skills and leadership abilities” and are creating a “sustainable work culture” in their regions while contributing positively to the community.Elvie’s opened in Belhaven in 2020 and is named after Evans’ grandmother. As the restaurant has grown in popularity, so have the accolades, including being named one of “America’s Best Restaurants” by the New York Times.Sambou’s has also been praised in the New York Times for its oxtails, which were listed in an article titled “25 restaurant dishes we couldn’t stop thinking about this year.”Alex Perry and Kumi Omori, of Vestige restaurant in Ocean Springs, are also semifinalists in the Best Chef in the South category.
