40+ Memorial Day Store Hours and Restaurant Hours for 2024

Memorial Day and Memorial Day weekend are a time when we honor service members who have fought for our country, and made the ultimate sacrifice. It is a time to take a break from our normal routine and reflect, honor and pay tribute. 

But many often also think of Monday, May 27, which is when Memorial Day is observed in 2024,  as the unofficial kickoff of summer. The weather is warm, the pools are open and our BBQs are fired up. All the indicators of summer are here, and there’s a long weekend as a bonus.

Plus, all the Memorial Day sales retailers are running make the long weekend a smart time to shop.

Do Stores Close On Memorial Day?

Are our favorite retail chains also getting a day off or a long weekend? In most cases, no. In fact, there are some great Memorial Day sales to be found in stores, as well as online — because the majority of chains are open on Memorial Day. However, some may have modified hours, so it’s never a bad idea to check in with local restaurants, grocery stores and department stores to confirm they are open before venturing out.

Stores Open on Memorial Day 2024 + Memorial Day Store Hours

If you need last-minute hot dog buns or mayo for the potato salad, expect these stores to be open on Memorial Day.

7-Eleven: Whether you need a Big Gulp or cheesy nachos, locations of this chain are open nationwide on Memorial Day, but hours may vary by location. It’s best to call a local store to confirm hours. 

Academy Sports + Outdoors: Stores will be open on Memorial Day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. You’ll find a lot on sale, from outdoor cooking, to patio, to camping. Plus, veterans, active-duty military and first responders get 10% off through July 4 in stores and online.

Best Buy: Stores will be open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Memorial Day.

Big Lots: Planning a last-minute cookout for Memorial Day? Not a problem. Big Lots is open on Memorial Day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

BJ’s Wholesale: Whether you need mustard or paper towels, locations of this warehouse store are open regular hours on Memorial Day (that’s 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. for most stores).

Dick’s Sporting Goods: If you need some camping chairs or yard games for your party, Dick’s Sporting Goods will be open regular hours (10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at most locations).

Dollar General: This popular bargain-finder store is open regular hours, which vary by location

Dollar Tree Whether you need shampoo or batteries, this chain is open normal store operating hours.

FedEx: Print & Ship centers will be open, but expect different hours (10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the stores we checked).

Giant Food: Stock up on odds and ends for that family BBQ at this supermarket, where stores are open regular store hours during the Memorial Day weekend.

H.E.B: If you just realized that you’ll need more burgers before dinner, there’s no reason to worry. This grocery store’s locations are open regular hours. The pharmacy closes 5 p.m.

HomeGoods: Whether you need more towels or sheets for a houseguest or want to spruce up your patio with new furniture, stores in the U.S. will be open with regular store hours.

JCPenney: Stores will be open regular hours, which are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for most stores.

Kirkland’s Home: This chain will be open normal business hours, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29.

Kohl’s: Kohl’s is known for its Memorial Day sales, and you’ll be able to shop in stores during normal business hours (9 a.m. to 9 p.m.).

Macy’s: Stores will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Memorial Day. Check out our favorite Memorial Day deals from the Macy’s sale.

Marshalls: If you’d love to have a new hat for a day at the beach, stores in the U.S. will be open with regular store hours, which vary by location.

Michaels: Family gatherings are a fun excuse for some crafting, and locations of this arts and crafts chain  will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (that’s a little earlier than its usual 9 p.m. closing time)  on Memorial Day. 

Office Depot and OfficeMax: Memorial Day may be a common day to have off from the office, but if work beckons, this chain’s store hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at most locations, but check with your local store.

Petco: Does Fido need a new toy to keep him occupied during the big cookout? Petco stores will be open and operating during regular hours on Memorial Day.

PetSmart: Stores will be open, but will close early (6 p.m.) at most locations.

Publix: Whether you realized you have no lemons for the iced tea or milk for the coffee, Publix stores will be open their traditional operating hours on Memorial Day.

Sam’s Club: Stores will be open on Memorial Day, but will close early (at 6 p.m.). Remember that Plus members can get in at 8 a.m. two hours before the clubs open, a nice perk for beating the last-minute Memorial Day rush.

Sheetz: This Mid-Atlantic restaurant and convenience chain with over 640 locations will be open on Memorial Day with all services, including their made-to-order menu available 24/7.

Smart & Final: This chain of grocery warehouse stores in California, Nevada and Arizona will have regular hours on Memorial Day – 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Target: Expect regular store hours on May 29 but check Target.com or the Target app for local store information.

The Fresh Market: This chain  is open Memorial Day and Memorial Day weekend for regular hours from 8 a.m. through 9 p.m.

T.J. Maxx: A day off from the office is also a great time to go shopping for new shoes. Stores in the U.S. will be open Memorial Day Weekend and Memorial Day itself with regular store hours, which vary  by location.

Trader Joe’s: If it turns out you forgot to buy those dips for dinner, this chain is open regular hours on Memorial Day.

Walgreens: Walgreens stores will be open during regular business hours on Memorial Day, but select non-24 hour pharmacies will be open with modified hours. Walgreens store locator may be used to check local store and pharmacy hours.

Walmart:  This chain is a must-visit for party, pool and gardening needs, and will be open during regular hours on Memorial Day. 

Wegmans: Forgot to buy condiments? There’s no reason to worry. This popular grocery chain is open regular hours.

What’s Closed on Memorial Day?

Banks: While not a store, it is where you go to put your money. As Memorial Day is a federal holiday, banks are closed on Memorial Day. If you’ll be needing cash that day, be sure to think ahead.

Costco: Not many chains are closed on Memorial Day, but Costco is. Be sure to stock up on your paper goods in advance!

USPS: Have something you need to mail? Better get it done a few days early. USPS offices are closed on all federal holidays, including Memorial Day.

Restaurants Open on Memorial Day 

Most major U.S. restaurant chains will be open Memorial Day. However, locations inside office buildings might be closed, since the office workers won’t be in.

Boston Market: If you are craving delicious chicken and sides, this chain will be open with normal hours.

Burger King: Whether you want a Whopper or some spicy nuggets, Burger Kings will be open with regular hours.

Carrabba’s Italian Grill: Maybe some people will be enjoying a BBQ, but you are feeling like a heaping bowl of pasta. This chain will be open with normal hours, which vary by location.

Cheesecake Factory: Grill at home, but go out for dessert because Cheesecake Factory will be open regular hours, which vary by location.

Chipotle: Guac may be extra, but it is available. That’s because most Chipotle locations will be open on Memorial Day.

Cracker Barrel: Start the day with a hearty breakfast at this delicious spot for biscuits and gravy, because all locations will be operating with normal hours, which vary.

Denny’s: This chain is known for always being open, and they stand true to that reputation. If you are craving a Grand Slam breakfast, you are in luck. Hours may vary by location, but most will be open.

Dunkin’: It may be a busy day with lots of plans, but Dunkin’ is open so you can get your coffee fix all day long!

IHOP: If you would love a big stack of pancakes, this chain is open but hours vary by location.

Long John Silver’s: Restaurants will be open normal hours on Memorial Day. Enjoy limited-time summer specials, including the OREO Cookies & Cream Cheesecake.

McDonald’s: Get that Big Mac fix, because this fast food chain is open with normal hours, though hours may vary by location.

Olive Garden: Memorial Day may be a popular day for burgers and hot dogs, but if you rather have bottomless breadsticks, this chain is open with regular hours.

Red Lobster: Take the whole family out to get their seafood fix by loading up on crab legs and lobster tails, because this restaurant will be open with normal hours.

Ruth’s Chris Steak House: Steak is delicious, but if you don’t want to make your own, you can always go to this steakhouse. They will be open with normal hours.

Starbucks: Sometimes that shot of espresso is the only way we get through a long day. Luckily, all Starbucks locations will be open. Note that some Starbucks located near lots of offices stay closed during non-business-hours, or close very early. And those locations will likely stay closed (or open for limited hours only) on Memorial Day.

Taco Bell: Celebrate the return of Mexican pizza because all locations of this chain will be open on Memorial Day.

Wendy’s: Get those spicy chicken tenders everyone is so wild about, because all locations of this chain will be open on Memorial Day.
