9-1-1 star Kenneth Choi discusses all the different reactions to Buck’s new relationship. Those reactions from Buck’s 118 teammates come at the end of “There Goes the Groom”, which is written by Tim Minear & Nicole Barraza Keim, with John J. Gray directing. Though the episode is mostly centered on the long-awaited wedding between Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Howard (Choi), Buck and Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) inadvertently end up revealing that they’re dating when they arrive late together.

In an interview with Screen Rant‘s Rachel Foertsch, Choi reacted to the team’s varied responses to Buck’s new relationship. Choi shares his favorite reaction, which belonged to Buck’s mom (played by Dee Wallace). Choi also reflected on why the more subtle responses worked so well and expressed his excitement for where the relationship could go in the future, including potentially 9-1-1 season 8. Read the quote below:

I thought it was great, because you see the relationship develop in Episode 4, and then in 5, it builds, and no one really knows about it except for Maddie and Eddie. And to have this moment where they come in, and nothing is said, you just see physically, and you have to put it together. I thought it was kind of a lovely thing, because it’s what all of the characters are doing. They’re all sitting there putting it together.

The greatest reaction, I thought [laughs], was Mrs. Buckley, who’s played by Dee Wallace. If you watch carefully, she has this reaction of utter confusion, like, “What is happening here? What’s going on? Why are they both dirty? What?” It was my favorite reaction, because it was genuine shock and awe. But I think for everybody else, especially the 118, the reaction is just like, “Oh, well, they look so happy together.” And that’s kind of all you really want for your best friends, isn’t it? When you meet a best friend’s significant other, all you want is for them to treat them right and for them to be happy, and at that moment, you can see that they’re very happy.

It doesn’t have anything to do with, “Were they kissing?” It’s just, “Oh, Buck finally looks like he’s happy.” I’m super excited for the storyline too because, personally, I became really good friends with Louis Ferrigno Jr. I think he’s a great actor and this new energy that he’s bringing in is wonderful. I think he’s so charming playing Tommy Kinard. I’m excited to see where their relationship is going to go.

Why The Reactions To Buck’s New Relationship Work So Well

The Cast Reacts As They Would To Any Relationship

The scene, as Choi describes it, works perfectly because each member of the 118 has an understated but different reaction. Howard, who has kept in touch with Tommy, can put the information together quickly. Henrietta Wilson (Aisha Hinds), who has always had a bit of a sibling relationship with Buck, leans into Karen (Tracie Thoms) with a playful reaction and suggests a relative lack of surprise.

Maddie and Eddie (Ryan Guzman), the two most important people in Buck’s life, his sister and his best friend, reacted earlier. Maddie, humorously, has a few moments of surprise, but she quickly moves on and helps give her brother the right advice. It’s the same for Eddie, who says Buck coming out changes nothing about their relationship. Buck’s parents are admittedly more confused, as neither have a strong relationship with their son.

9-1-1: The 15 Best Episodes Ever

9-1-1 is a heart-pounding drama with many amazing episodes that take shows about emergency responders to new levels, and these are the best of them.

With the coming out scene largely out of the way, 9-1-1 can move on to depicting the ins and outs of the new pairing and whether it’s Buck’s endgame or simply the beginning of a larger story about self-discovery. Although it’s fair to expect some light teasing in the episodes ahead, the acceptance and even the relative shrug at Buck’s coming out makes sense given the kind of inclusivity that the First Responder franchise has made efforts to highlight.

airs Thursdays at 8 PM ET on ABC.
