April 28 Update:

Ever-so quietly, Amazon confirmed in an April 28 press release that Prime Day 2022 will happen in July — but they didn’t reveal the precise date, yet. We are still anticipating Prime Day in 2022 will take place around mid-July.

We’ll update with more information as soon as it’s released, so check back.

The million-dollar question racing through the minds of antsy Prime members – When is Amazon Prime Day this year? Before we dive into when it is, let’s get re-familiarized with what it is first.

Amazon Prime Day is an annual two-day event for Prime members during which millions of products go on sale. Amazon will deeply, deeply discount select merchandise, especially its own line of gear – Fire TV Stick, Fire HD tablet and a slew of other brands. Popular social media influencers also get in on the Prime Day action with special live events throughout the day and night. Amazon also uses Prime Day to put a spotlight on the small businesses selling on its platform and has even offered incentives to shop these online stores prior to Prime Day in years past.

Just how big is Prime Day in the world of retail? Amazon announced its Prime Day earnings for last year, which included early Prime Day deals that rolled out two weeks before the event. According to Amazon, “Members purchased more than 250 million items worldwide.” Small businesses earned $1.9 billion in sales (a 100% increase over 2020) during the event thanks to Amazon’s Spend $10, Get $10 promo. When it comes to overall spending, Prime Day is an over $5 billion shopping event. Check out estimates for past Prime Day spending.

Other merchants jump on the Prime Day bandwagon, too. Amazon’s main competitors, like Walmart, Target and Best Buy, run their own sales throughout the same time frame that, at the bare minimum, equal the discounts on the same (or similar) merchandise as Amazon.

Note: The cost of a Amazon Prime membership is increasing to $139, up from its long-held fee of $119 a year. Find out how you can save the most with Amazon.

So, when is Amazon Prime Day? After oodles of speculation, Amazon announced the July 12 and July 13 Prime Day dates in the wee hours of the morning on June 16.

We had previously assumed that Prime Day would happen sometime in July this year. And, according to the press release on April 28, Amazon confirmed this timing.

“Prime Day will take place in July in more than 20 countries. During Amazon’s annual shopping event, Prime members will be able to save on products from national brands and small businesses across every category.”

Prime Day is also, more or less, somewhat of a preview of the deals customers can expect during Black Friday in November. That’s just how good the Prime Day deals are for those of us experienced in the Black Friday hullabaloo.

When Will Amazon Announce Prime Day 2022?

Amazon isn’t one to spring Prime Day on its customers at the very last minute. Quite the contrary. Although timing can vary, Amazon announces the Prime Day days a few weeks ahead of time. This year, it announced Prime Day just shy of four weeks before Prime Day on June 16.

You can generally expect the news to arrive via press release. And you’ll likely see teasers and videos, too, like this one from 2019:

This year marks the eighth Prime Day mega event and, until 2020, Amazon had been pretty consistent with its timing. Even though it’s complete conjecture, we expect Prime Day to happen later than in 2021. Read on to find out why.

Past Prime Day Dates

For starters, Prime Day has historically happened in July – typically after the Fourth of July. But the last two straight years have thwarted that timing.

In 2021, Prime Day started on June 21 at 12 a.m. (PT) and lasted through June 22 at 12 a.m. (PT) – that’s 48 hours of an online shopping-palooza. Amazon announced those dates on June 2 of that year in an unobtrusive press release, giving Prime members just shy of three weeks to prep. This was actually the earliest Prime Day had ever happened.

In 2020, Amazon postponed Prime Day because of the global pandemic and shelter-in-place orders. On Sept. 24 Amazon announced that Prime Day would be pushed into October, specifically Oct. 13 and 14, 2020 – the latest Prime Day has happened, but giving Prime members its usual less-than-three-weeks’ notice. The timing made the last quarter of the year a big festival of savings, combining Black Friday and Cyber Monday into the Prime Day mix.

This is how it panned out every other year since Prime Day first started:

  • 2019: July 15 to July 16 for 48 shopping hours.
  • 2018: July 16 to July 17 for 48 shopping hours.
  • 2017: July 10 (6 p.m. PT) through July 11 (11:59 a.m. PT) for 36 shopping hours.
  • 2016: July 12 for 24 shopping hours.
  • 2015: July 15 for 24 shopping hours.

With all this said, we’re guessing Prime Day will get back to its normal timing this year in mid-July. Of course, there are no guarantees. Every year, Prime Day becomes an even bigger monster than it was the year before and Amazon counts on it. Don’t expect any big announcements until the beginning of summer (at the earliest).

Last year, Amazon Prime members made Instant Pot cookers, DNA tests, the iRobot Roomba and Keurig K-Slim Coffee Maker the big merchandise winners. We can barely contain ourselves in anticipation of what this year’s Prime Day will have in store.
