David Ramsey, who portrays John Diggle in The CW’s Arrowverse franchise, promises there will be updates coming soon on his Justice U spinoff series. While the Arrowverse took a major hit this year with The CW canceling several shows, DC TV is still a brand that continues to be part of the network. The Flash is set to end with season 9 in 2023, while Superman & Lois season 3 is on its way. Even though not set in the Arrowverse, The CW also has the new DC TV drama Gotham Knights coming up next year.

However, there may be news soon on a potential new Arrowverse spinoff series. Ramsey, who has played Diggle in the Arrowverse since 2012, is being eyed to headline his own show as Justice U has been in development at the network since January 2022. While celebrating his recent birthday, a fan asked Ramsey on Instagram if there would be any news soon on Justice U, following his update in October that the project has tapped a new writer. Even though Ramsey couldn’t “be specific just yet,” the Arrowverse veteran promised that “the smoke is clearing” and that “good stuff is in the works,” sharing the following:

For the time being, it’s unclear what exactly the updates are going to be, as it could be something as simple as Justice U getting a pilot order. It’s important to remember that the Arrowverse spinoff, which would focus on Diggle’s mission to “recruit five young meta humans to live undercover as freshmen at a prestigious university,” has never gone past development stages since the initial announcement. With pilot season around the corner, this is the time when networks, including The CW, are starting to look at building their next TV season. While Justice U could be getting ready to move to pilot stages, the future of the Arrowverse has been in question ever since Nexstar acquired 75% ownership from WarnerMedia and Paramount.

With both Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, and Stargirl having been canceled, while The Flash season 9 will wrap up the series, most of the Arrowverse is pretty much gone at this point. Despite Superman & Lois being part of the Arrowverse, it’s the only remaining show that takes place outside Earth-Prime. However, even Superman & Lois’ future remains unclear as the new owners are striving to target different demographics with their evolving programming strategy. There is also the angle of DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran taking charge of TV, film, and comics, and so far, The CW has not been indicated to be part of their plans, meaning Justice U’s chances could be slim to none.

At the very least, Justice U may proceed with a pilot order and have it filmed, which would reportedly be directed by Ramsey, who has helmed several episodes of the Arrowverse shows. However, similar to the scrapped Black Lightning spinoff, Painkiller, a pilot may be all they get to do as The CW could still decide not to pick it up to series. Time will tell if Justice U will happen or become another canceled DC TV show, but with the way the Arrowverse is going, Diggle’s adventure may never come to fruition.
