Dau Mabil’s body found in river weeks after he was reported missing

A Hinds County Chancery Court judge heard from the widow of Dau Mabil during a hearing on Tuesday.Mabil lived in Belhaven with his wife, Karissa Bowley, who reported him missing in late March. His body was found more than two weeks ago in a river about 60 miles south of Jackson. Mabil’s widow and brother, Bul Mabil, have been at odds ever since. Bul Mabil took Bowley to court to keep her from cremating his brother’s remains until more can be learned about his death. Police have said that foul play isn’t suspected, but his family still has questions.Lisa Ross, an attorney representing Bul Mabil, introduced text messages during Tuesday’s hearing that she said shows Dau Mabil and his wife were separated at the time of his death. Ross accused Bowley of trying to “hijack the autopsy.”During the first hearing, a judge granted an emergency request to ensure the state medical examiner could conduct an autopsy. Bowley’s attorney said they do not object to a third-party autopsy as long as the medical examiner that performs it is qualified.
