The first official trailer for Beetlejuice 2 finally provides insight into Michael Keaton’s return after 36 years. The sequel, which is titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, sees the return of the titular bio-exorcist alongside original characters Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) and Delia Deetz (Catherine O’Hara). While the exact details surrounding Beetlejuice’s return are still unknown, new details tease the surprising turn of events.

Before the Beetlejuice 2 trailer was released, first-look images highlighted Keaton’s Beetlejuice return. In addition, a group shot featured Lydia and Delia standing with sequel newcomers Astrid Deetz (Jenna Ortega) and a character named Rory (Justin Theroux). Interestingly, the teaser footage focuses on the original movie’s two most important figures: Beetlejuice and Lydia.

In the Beetlejuice 2 trailer, Lydia is shown running into the attic, which still houses Adam Maitland’s town model. Connecting back to how Beetlejuice resided in the model when not summoned, he’s seemingly back to his old tricks. Based on Keaton’s “the juice is loose” proclamation, it seems like Beetlejuice 2 will be the first time Beetlejuice and Lydia have seen each other in 36 years. This seemingly confirms that Beetlejuice has been completely trapped in the Neitherworld since he was last seen in Beetlejuice‘s 1988 ending.

Lydia’s Reaction To Beetlejuice’s Return Implies She Didn’t Summon Him

There are also hints regarding the details behind Beetlejuice’s return based on Lydia’s reaction. Considering she seems genuinely shocked to see him, it suggests that she isn’t the one who summoned him into the world of the living. Either Keaton’s character is accidentally summoned, or possibly someone else finds a way to bring the infamously mischievous character back. Perhaps Beetlejuice even finds a way to bypass the official summoning rules.

However, a moment earlier in the Beetlejuice 2 trailer sees Astrid taking the sheet off of the town model depicting Winter River. Curious like her mother Lydia, she may become the one who ends up bringing Beetlejuice back after all this much. Whether or not Lydia warned her about him or not remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: Lydia will not be happy with having to deal with the bio-exorcist after the mess he caused the last time he came around.
