Blake Lively’s A Simple Favor 2 Return Sets Up A Ridiculous Plot Twist After The Original’s Ending

It was recently announced that the 2018 movie, A Simple Favor, would be returning with a sequel, A Simple Favor 2, and not only that, but the original cast would be returning, including Blake Lively, which raises some serious questions about the end of the first movie and how Lively’s Emily is going to return. A Simple Favor is a comedy thriller starring Anna Kendrick as Stephanie Smothers, a mother and vlogger who becomes obsessed with Blake Lively’s mysterious Emily. Things take a turn though, when Emily goes missing and Stephanie discovers much more than she bargained for.

Although A Simple Favor 2 has been in talks since May 2022, it was only recently that the sequel was greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios, with various members of the original A Simple Favor cast returning. Alongside stars Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, and Kelly McCormack are set to return. And though this return is quite exciting, as the movie earned an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed nearly $100 million, there are some big questions about how the story can continue based on how the first movie ended.

A Simple Favor 2 Has To Erase Emily’s Prison Sentence Or Have A 20 Year Time Jump To Work

Despite being a very exciting endeavor, A Simple Favor 2 has many hurdles to jump in order to work, and one of the biggest is the ending of A Simple Favor. At the end of the 2018 movie, Stephanie discovers Emily’s crimes, and in a climactic scene where Henry Golding’s Sean gets shot, Stephanie tricks Emily into admitting what she had done on a live stream. Though Emily tries to run, she is hit by Stephanie’s friend Darren with his car. Thus, Emily is arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

If A Simple Favor 2 is going to include Blake Lively, a couple of things have to happen. Either the movie has to take place 20 years after the first, following Emily’s prison sentence, or Emily would have to get out of prison. The first option seems less likely, so the second will likely be the reality. A Simple Favor 2 will have to see Emily escape from jail or have her released early, perhaps on good behavior. Otherwise, Blake Lively’s return will be from prison only, which seems like a pretty boring route to take for a thriller sequel.

A Simple Favor 2 has another problem. According to People, the sequel is going to follow Stephanie as she travels to Italy for Emily’s extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman. Now, it was bad enough that Emily’s 20 year prison sentence was going to be erased, but tacking on a wedding seemed even more difficult. It seems that A Simple Favor 2 will have a lot of catching up to do if it wants to realistically follow the first movie. Fortunately, even if the movie doesn’t make sense, it is sure to be a fun and thrilling time.
