reveal during a game showcase on June 9.

  • A new
    Black Ops
title could be an exciting return for Treyarch.

If there’s anything reliable in the world of gaming, it’s that a Call of Duty title can be expected with every passing year, and it looks like there’s reason to believe an exciting update in the series is coming soon. Development on Call of Duty games principally bounces between three studios – Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games – and each has delivered some memorable additions to the franchise. The series has also had its ups and downs, unsurprisingly, but there’s always a reasonable chance that a new game could strike just the right balance to become another classic.

Although Treyarch originally stepped into the series with the fondly-remembered Call of Duty 3 and World at War, the Black Ops games are what the studio is most associated with today. The most recent Treyarch game was Black Ops Cold War, and its 2020 release would indicate that it’s time for Treyarch’s next title to be revealed. After two years of Modern Warfare in a row, a new Black Ops could be a welcome change of pace, especially if it manages to recapture what made the earlier Black Ops titles great.

A Gulf War Call Of Duty: Black Ops Game Is Expected

Leaks & Rumors Have Pointed To A 90s Setting

Although it’s unusually coy for an official announcement, it’s easy to be pretty confident about the nature of the reveal. The seemingly military theme obviously points toward Call of Duty, and the black and orange color scheme of the teaser image is heavily associated with Black Ops. As far as direct confirmation goes, the emblem of a three-headed Cerberus used in the teaser matches one that was found in Modern Warfare 3 files earlier this year, as reported by Call of Duty news source Charlie Intel on X (formerly Twitter).

According to previous Call of Duty leaks, the new Black Ops is expected to take place during the Gulf War, a major conflict that the franchise hasn’t yet focused on. It’s a setting that would be best served by a nuanced approach, which may not exactly be Call of Duty‘s strong suit. Treyarch is responsible for some of the Call of Duty franchise’s best campaigns, however, so there’s always that.

Black Ops Cold War wasn’t one of the most well-received Call of Duty games, but a rushed development cycle and plenty of rumors about Treyarch having to step in on a struggling project seem like adequate explanation for its failings. A new Black Ops has a chance to restore the series to its former glory, even if it still struggles with the general foibles of live-service gaming. Regardless, June 9 should be the day that the world learns more about the nextCall of Duty, so fans should definitely mark their calendars and be ready to tune in.
