A live-action Gargoyles show is in the works at Disney+, and with The Conjuring’s Jame Wan and Annabelle’s Gary Dauberman behind the project anticipation for the remake of the cult-classic animated series is high. The original show was created by Greg Weisman and Walt Disney Television Animation and enjoyed an incredibly successful run between 1994 and 1997. Gargoyles is fondly remembered for its surprisingly dark storylines and gothic tone. While a few potential revivals were discussed over the decades since the show concluded, it’s only now that the live-action Gargoyles remake is finally in development and on the way to Disney+.

The original show found a new audience on Disney+, which is possibly why Disney has given the live-action Gargoyles remake the green light. While little is known about the show, there’s already speculation about who could return for the Gargoyles live-action cast and how Wan and Dauberman will adapt the story of Goliath and the Brooklyn Gargoyles for a live-action format. The release date for the show is still a little ways off, but there’s already plenty to digest when it comes to Disney’s live-action Gargoyles reboot.

Live Action Gargoyles Cast: Who Will Be In The Reboot?

Gargoyles - Demona looking down

The live-action Gargoyles cast has yet to be announced. However, since the gargoyles themselves are likely to be CGI and require voice actors rather than an on-screen presence, there’s no reason some or all of the original cast members can’t reprise their roles. This means there’s potential for the cast of the Gargoyles live-action remake to include:

  • Keith David (Community, Rick & Morty) as Goliath, the leader of the Manhattan Clan
  • Jeffrey Glenn Bennett (Dexter’s Laboratory, Earthworm Jim) as Brooklyn, Goliath’s second-in-command
  • Thom Adcox-Hernandez (The Buzz on Maggie, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy) as Lexington, the technical genius
  • Bill Fagerbakke (Coach, SpongeBob SquarePants) as Broadway, the good-natured gargoyle with a hatred of guns
  • Brigitte Bako (G-Spot, Red Shoe Diaries) as Angela, Goliath’s Daughter

Sadly, the later Ed Asner (Roots, Thunder Alley) passed away in 2021, meaning Hudson will need to be recast. Whether the cast members of the animated show will be invited to return by Disney, however, remains to be seen, and until any official Gargoyles live-action cast announcements are made it’s difficult to speculate on who could be involved.

Live-Action Gargoyles Plot: How Is The Remake Adapting The Cartoon?

Goliath looming over the city in Gargoyles

So far James Wan and Gary Dauberman haven’t revealed much about the live-action Gargoyles show plot, though it’s expected to follow much of the narrative of the original animated series. The animated Gargoyles series ran from 1994 to 1997 and gained a strong following thanks to its innovative and complex story arcs, with the adventures of Goliath and the Manhattan Clan being surprisingly deep for a Saturday morning cartoon.

While it only explains the show in the broadest sense, the opening introduction delivered by Goliath on every episode of the show explains the basic premise of Gargoyles well:

One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night, We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken, and we live again! We are defenders of the night! We are gargoyles!

The show focuses on Goliath and the rest of the Manhattan Clan gargoyles, who awake in Manhattan after being purchased by a Billionaire and moved from a castle in Scotland, breaking a centuries-old curse. Xanatos quickly becomes the antagonist of the series, and it’s expected that this premise will be followed by the live-action Gargoyles remake when it arrives on Disney+.
