🏔️ Climbing the highest point east of the Mississippi!
🚴🏻‍♂️ Cruising along the Blue Ridge Parkway, on my way to climb Mt. Mitchell, which is the highest point in the United States, east of the Mississippi. At least according to Siri on my Apple Watch when I asked before the ride. So, if the fact is wrong, don’t be mad at me, be mad at Siri. This is one of the most beautiful road rides in the eastern U.S., and you don’t need Siri to confirm that fact. Three hours of climbing later, after starting in Asheville, I am finally reaching the summit of Mt. Mitchell. This mountain is no joke!

🚴‍♂️Cycling to the top of Mt. Mitchell in North Carolina is a challenging and exhilarating experience. The route to the summit, starting from Asheville, takes riders through the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. This journey covers approximately 35 miles and involves a significant elevation gain, making it a rigorous climb suitable for well-conditioned cyclists.

The ascent to Mt. Mitchell begins with rolling hills, gradually becoming steeper as you approach the mountain. The final stretch, known as the Mt. Mitchell State Park climb, is particularly demanding, featuring sharp switchbacks and a consistent gradient that tests both endurance and determination. Along the way, cyclists are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains, lush forests, and diverse wildlife.

Reaching the summit, which stands at 6,684 feet, offers a sense of accomplishment and awe. Mt. Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, providing expansive vistas from its observation deck. The temperature at the top can be noticeably cooler, even in summer, so cyclists should be prepared for varying weather conditions.

Mt. Mitchell’s significance extends beyond its physical prominence. Named after Elisha Mitchell, a professor who dedicated his life to proving its status as the tallest peak in the region, the mountain holds historical and scientific importance. Mitchell’s efforts in the mid-19th century contributed to the understanding of the Appalachian Mountains’ geology and topography. Tragically, he died in 1857 while conducting measurements and is buried near the summit.

Cycling to the top of Mt. Mitchell is not just a test of physical strength but also an opportunity to connect with the rich natural and historical heritage of the region. The ride epitomizes the beauty and challenge of North Carolina’s mountainous landscapes, making it a memorable endeavor for any avid cyclist.
