Summary

  • Margot Robbie’s return as Harley Quinn is not confirmed despite her popularity, raising concerns.
  • The character will feature in four upcoming DC entries in 2024, showcasing varied iterations.
  • Director James Gunn expressed interest in working with Robbie again, though he debunked solo project rumors.

Margot Robbie still has no confirmed project to return as Harley Quinn, even though the character will come back with four upcoming DC entries in 2024, raising concerns. While the DCEU proved itself controversial over the years, Robbie’s Harley Quinn was one of the few positive aspects of the franchise that remained consistent. The actress was the best part of 2016’s Suicide Squad, which led to her leading DC’s Birds of Prey movie and even working with James Gunn, who is charting all DC Universe projects, in 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

Despite being the DCEU’s most popular star, Robbie still has to be announced as the Harley Quinn of the DCU. That raises some concern, as Gunn has already revealed that Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, John Cena as Peacemaker, and more DCEU stars will be returning in the DCU as their characters, though there is no word on Robbie’s Harley Quinn. While Robbie’s Harley Quinn future hangs in the balance, the character will have a packed 2024, as different versions of Harley will appear in an upcoming DC film and multiple TV shows.

There Are 4 Harley Quinns Coming This Year

Harley Quinn is set to have a huge 2024, with the character appearing in three animated series and a movie. The year will see a version of Harley that is similar to Robbie’s in a lot of ways and three other iterations that try new things with the character. First up is Suicide Squad Isekai, which will be released on June 27. The anime follows Harley Quinn and other members of the Suicide Squad being sent to a fantasy land with magical creatures. Then comes Batman: Caped Crusader on August 1. In the series, an Asian American Harley flips the script.

This iteration will see Harleen Quinzel be the funny, whimsical side of the character, with Harley Quinn being someone to be feared. On October 4 comes the biggest Harley Quinn release of the year, as Lady Gaga will debut her version of the character — called Lee — opposite Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie à Deux. As the first superhero movie musical, the Joker sequel and its take on Harley Quinn draw a lot of attention. Finally, Harley Quinn season 5 will arrive sometime in 2025, taking Harley and Poison Ivy from Gotham City to Metropolis.
