With the focus of the latest arc being an android-related mystery, Goten and Trunks will need all the help they can get–even a former villain.
Warning: Spoilers for Dragon Ball Super chapter 89Despite Dragon Ball Super‘s new arc being all about the mysteries surrounding the new androids that keep appearing, Goten and Trunks aren’t exactly the detective type. That’s why they can use all the help they can get, even if it’s coming from former-villain-turned-love-interest, Mai.
It’s safe to say that Goten and Trunks aren’t the most observant kids on the planet. Goten is just as oblivious as his father always was, while Trunks is so lovestruck with Mai that he’s missing things even he would usually notice. Mai herself is always in a bit of a weird spot, however. She is currently about Trunks’ age, but she was an adult woman at one point before being de-aged by the dragon balls, and then aging up again to where she is now. Setting aside what that means for any potential relationship, it does give Mai a bit of an edge, as she’s already been a teenager once and isn’t so easily distracted.
Mai Can Help Trunks and Goten Solve Dragon Ball Super’s New Mystery
Mai is enrolled in Trunks’ school and introduced as a new student. However, she’s not the only new student, with the second introducing himself as “Baytah,” something that immediately catches Mai’s attention. She quickly recognizes his superior physical abilities, and not long after spots a patch of sewn together flesh that’s been a telltale sign of these organic-based androids. Mai even recognizes that he’s an android of a different type than 18, perhaps remembering her Red Ribbon Army days from early Dragon Ball. Of course, “Baytah” outs himself as Android Beta before the day is out, challenging Goten to a battle that Beta rapidly loses.
Why Trunks and Goten Need Mai in Dragon Ball Super
Goten is the muscle, while Trunks can work as the face, but neither of them really fills the role of brains of the operation. Working with Mai would offer the two boys someone with a lot more experience and a more analytical mind. Given all the work Mai has done for Bulma in recent years, it’s pretty likely that she’s become very familiar with how robots and androids work, so she even has the specialized knowledge they might need to defeat a tougher android than Beta. With Mai at the school now, it seems to confirm that she will have a bigger role to play in this arc than just being the object of Trunks’ affections. As a trio, the kids might have more luck getting this mystery sorted out than by working alone.
Dragon Ball Super‘s android mystery is still in its early stages, and there’s only so much they can do without stepping on the movie’s toes. Hopefully, Mai can help to unravel this quickly and move the plot forward.
