El Mencho, a Mexican immigrant who was born into poverty and raised avocados, left school after his first year and entered the country illegally in the 1980s. Eventually, he rose to the top of the criminal enterprise and established the CJNG. Despite running a billion-dollar business, he never flaunted his money like previous criminals who were notorious for purchasing marble palaces and cruising around the streets of Guadalajara and Mexico City in Lamborghinis and Bugattis. Norma Oseguera Cervantes, or El Mencho, was born in the Mexican village of Culotitlán in the Aguililla, Michoacán region in either July 1964 or July 1966. Mencho was raised by a low-income family that raised avocados. Juan, Miguel, Antonio, Marn, and Abraham were his five brothers. In the fifth grade, he left school to work in the fields. He began watching over plantations at the age of 14. He decided he desired a better life a few years later, and in the 1980s, he fled his country and moved illegally to the state of California in the United States. He adopted various names and aliases while living in the United States, including “Rubén vila,” “José López Prieto,” “Miguel Valadez,” “Carlos Hernández Mendoza,” and “Roberto Salgado,” among others.
