CARTOON EVOLUTION #15
I take a look at the history and evolution of Yosemite Sam (known in Europe as Pirate Sam), the meanest, roughest, toughest, hootin’est, tootin’est, shootin’est Looney Tune north, south, east aaaaand west of the Pecos – and the hilariously chaotic creation of Friz Freleng, devised to bring a certain spice to the Bugs Bunny cartoons of the late-40s.
While Sam is most recognizable as a Bandit Cowboy or a Feisty Pirate, he is also one of the single most adaptable and versatile Looney Tunes characters, seen in scores of aliases and designs over the years – causing trouble for Bugs, and many other toons along the way.
I take a look at how Sam has evolved and how animators changed his look, personality and visual style over the years.
