Men’s Day service at Belmont Baptist Church in Raymond on Father’s Day. Pastor Tonie Crisler and his congregation recognized their fathers by pinning flowers on them.Congressman Bennie Thompson and U.S. Senate candidate Ty Pinkins were the guest speakers at the service. Both shared why Father’s Day is so important.”Recognizing fathers on this day and the importance they play in their families, but also the community, especially given where we are in society today. Understanding that we need strong fathers to raise strong sons to create strong fathers in our community,” Pinkins said. Thompson said, “My father died when I was very young so it was the good people of Bolton who raised me. I am very supportive and sympathetic to people who don’t have the benefit of having a male person in the home, but we don’t throw people away. We have to be the best that we can and those of us who are blessed to have that situation — we need to pass it on.” After the service, we asked some of the fathers about being appreciated on their day.”It’s a blessing day to day. All the hard work fathers have to go through and not feel like to be recognized so days like this is a total appreciation,” said Ryan Johnson. Dads were also out and about in South Jackson with their little ones, including Stephon Shelby and his three girls. This Father’s Day is one he’ll remember.”It’s pretty special. It’s hot out here today though, but it’s pretty good. It’s the first time having all of my kids at one time, so it’s a god moment,” Stephon Shelby said. Patriarchs of families pass down wisdom. Here is some advice for all of the dads and aspiring fathers on this meaningful holiday.”When you fall down just get back and wipe yourself off because that’s all about being a father. showing people how to fall and build yourself back up to where you want to be,” Johnson said. “I’d say stay consistent the best way you can. Stay in their life in a consistent way that you can and support,” said Stephon Shelby.
