Independence Day celebrations come early this year in the metro. The city of Jackson will hold the Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza Wednesday, July 3, at Smith Wills Stadium. The gates open at 4:30 p.m., with live music and entertainment beginning at 5 p.m. Fireworks will begin around 9 p.m. The event is free.The city of Madison is inviting the public to “Celebrate America” at the annual fireworks show, which is Wednesday, July 3, at 810 Madison Avenue. The fireworks display begins at 9 p.m.Freedom Fest will be held Wednesday at the Brandon Amphitheater and will include an art contest, cornhole competition, pie eating contest, inflatables and a community choir performance. The event begins at 6 p.m. and wraps up with fireworks.The city of Clinton is hosting its annual Fourth of July Red White and Blue Fest at Traceway Park. In addition to fireworks after dark, there will be music, family-friendly entertainment and plenty of food vendors. The event is free, but parking is $10 per car. Gates open at 4 p.m. Thursday.The Mississippi Braves and the city of Pearl will celebrate the holiday with fireworks after Thursday’s game against the Biloxi Shuckers. It’s also Thirsty Thursday, which means you can get a beer or a fountain drink for $3. Before the fireworks shows get started, you can go fishing. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks announced that July 4 is a free fishing day, meaning residents won’t be required to have a license while fishing at any public water in the state.Don’t forget the Farm Bureau Watermelon Classic. The event, which kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, is a fundraiser that benefits the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum.
