As darkness falls on May 23, the full Moon will appear quite close to the bright red star Antares, in Scorpius, as the pair rise. May’s full Moon is known as the Flower Moon. The Native American tribes of the northen United States called this the Flower Moon, as flowers are abundant this time of year in most of these areas.

A full Moon is associated for its size and luminous glow. This takes place when the Earth is directly in the between the Sun and the Moon. It happens every 29 and a hald days.

Also, skywatchers in the Americas, Western Africa and Middle Africa will see the Moon occult the bright star Antares (Scorpius Constellation) near 3:00 UTC on May 24, 2024. Skywatchers on the East Coast of the U.S. – south of Delaware and down through the whole state of Florida you’ll actually observe the Moon pass in front of Antares, an event called occultation. Over a couple of hours as the pair rise into the night sky, the Moon will move slightly in its orbit, first obscuring and then revealing Antares. Other locations may see Antares very close to the limb of the Moon.
