Happy Gilmore star Christopher McDonald gives a surprising update on a potential sequel to the 27-year-old movie. The original movie remains one of Adam Sandler’s most iconic to date, on par with the likes of Billy Madison and The Waterboy. In the movie, Sandler portrayed Happy Gilmore, a down-on-his-luck former hockey player who decides to capitalize on his newfound golf talent to save his grandmother’s home from foreclosure. However, his hot temper threatens to upend his new career. Despite the comedy’s lasting legacy, there was virtually no discussion of a sequel for years, but that has now changed.

While appearing on The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima, McDonald gave a surprising and exciting update on a sequel. He explained that, while visiting with his former co-star, Sandler showed McDonald the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. McDonald did express some hesitation about making this revelation on-air, since the movie isn’t confirmed, but he reiterated that he had seen the script and that “it’s in the works.” Check out his statement below:

I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, “McDonald, you’re gonna love this.” I said, “What?” He says, “How about that,” and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, “Well, that would be awesome.” So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!

Will Happy Gilmore 2 Actually Happen?

Carl Weathers as Derrick "Chubbs" Peterson and Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore converse in a scene from Happy Gilmore.

The news that Sandler is potentially already reasonably far into the writing process of Happy Gilmore 2 is quite surprising. Not only was the discussion of a sequel practically non-existent for years, but it’s also well-known that Sandler rarely makes sequels to his movies. Despite long-held hopes for sequels to The Waterboy, Happy Gilmore, and Little Nicky, the actor hasn’t entertained such ideas. Additionally, in his decades-long career, Sandler has only ever made sequels to three of his original movies with Grown Ups, Hotel Transylvania, and Murder Mystery.

However, McDonald’s account of Happy Gilmore 2‘s progress is actually in line with a rare update Sandler provided two years ago, in which he revealed that he was open to a sequel and hoped to make one someday. Sandler even suggested a plot where Gilmore would participate in a senior golf tour. Still, this is one of the few mentions of a sequel Sandler made in decades, and in recent years, he has been very busy with his Netflix collaborations. McDonald’s statement, though, suggests Sandler’s plans were more solid than one may have thought.

Adam Sandler has had his fair share of bad comedies, but there are plenty of great ones, and these 10 have criminally low Rotten Tomatoes scores.

If Sandler felt confident enough to show McDonald a first draft, it’s strong evidence that the movie is making real progress. Meanwhile, there’s little standing in the way of a sequel since Sandler owns his own production company to back the film, and Netflix would likely be eager to distribute it. Additionally, his movie already garner strong viewership, and a sequel to a 27-year-old fan-favorite would only further stir interest. Viewers will need to wait for Sandler to comment on Happy Gilmore 2 before it’s officially confirmed, but the chances of it have risen significantly.
