In the Resident Evil 2 Remake, all your favorite puzzles are back, including moving the library shelves to get to a crucial location to finish the game. This will be slightly different depending on which character you are playing, either Leon or Claire, and will require several different steps in different locations to complete.

Many of the puzzles in the Resident Evil 2 Remake can be complicated and require multiple steps. The chess puzzle might be the most infamous one, but players must find card-themed keys, switch out different parts, and take special items to the right locations to solve the library shelf puzzle. This is crucial because without doing so, you cannot enter the part of the Clock Towerthat will allow you to leave the Raccoon City Police Department.

Leon’s Perspective

Resident Evil 2 Library

To complete this puzzle, a player should have a few things in their inventory. These items will play major roles in completing the puzzle and assist in story progression. As Leon, you will first need to get the Green Club Key, which is exclusive to his playthrough and cannot be found if you play as Claire.

You can find the Boiler Room just after the East Storage Room and take a quick breather – the room is also a save room. You can use the Club Key to unlock several locations, but you will next want to head to the Records Room to solve the library puzzle. Inside, you will find the Mechanic Jack Handle, the major piece of the puzzle you need to move the library shelves.

Claire’s Perspective

The main difference for Claire is that she has to find the Heart Key, which, similar to before, is exclusive to her playthrough and cannot be picked up by Leon. You can find the Heart Key in the Private Collection Room behind a Relief Portrait. If you pick up the portrait and examine it in your inventory, you can find the heart key and continue to the Records Room. From here on and for the rest of the puzzle, Leon and Claire can progress the same way.

Moving The Library Shelves

Getting To The Clock Tower

Once players have this Jack Tool, please take it to the Library and lower the stack in the middle of the area. This will allow players to begin shifting these stacks around and complete the puzzle.

As you move these stacks, it is important to move the furthest right piece one space to the left, where it fills in a space for the broken walkway in the Library. Move the middle and furthest left stack towards the left until the broken walkway is filled in. You can see the exact order to slide the shelves in The d3m0n0id‘s YouTube video above.

Be wary of your surroundings; Mr.
X is in play
at this point in the game and can chase after you as you attempt to solve the puzzle. It is likely best to make a save before attempting to move the library shelves so that you do not have to retrace your steps too far if he catches you.

Before you make your way over the newly created pathway, you should ensure you have the Large Gear in your inventory. You will need it in the Clock Tower. You will also need it for the next puzzle, so do not leave it in the Clock Tower just yet. Soon enough, you can leave the RPD and start to leave Raccoon City behind you. Regardless of what you do next as Leon or Claire, you have solved the library shelf puzzle in the Resident Evil 2 Remake and can keep moving forward.
