This weekend the city is marking the 59th Anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Wiley Evers with multiple events. “We never want to let a year go by where we don’t recognize and remember, so that’s why we made sure we were here today,” said his family member Courtney Cochrell.Evers dedicated his later life to advocating for civil rights including the right for any person to vote. “It’s the votes that put the people in, and it’s the people that do the right or wrong thing,” said Jackson performer Billy “Soul” Bonds.Evers was assassinated at his Jackson home on June 12, 1963. “There were some dark times, very dark, and he was willing to be the person to step forward and say you know, here I am, take me,” said his niece Carolyn Evers Cochrell.
