Democratic congressman Bennie Thompson, who served as chairman of the committee that investigated the Jan. 6 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, is speaking out about former president Donald Trump’s indictment. In an interview, Thompson called the new four-count indictment against Trump, vindication. Thompson, who was present in congressional chambers the day of the insurrection, led congressional committee members through 10 hearings, over 1,000 interviews, and millions of documents last year. “I think a lot of the work of our committee when we transfer that work for the Department of Justice, it provided a roadmap for the Department of Justice that ultimately assisted in these indictments of former President Trump,” Thompson said.Despite the indictment, Thompson says Trump should be considered innocent of the charges.
