The Masked Singer season 8 Muppets Night brought the reveal that legendary television host and politician Jerry Springer was Beetle, and now he shares why he wanted to join the show. As Beetle, Jerry delivered an elegant rendition of “The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra, as Kermit the Frog sat on a yellow crescent moon and danced in the background. However, he was the first contestant to be unmasked before Robo Girl, who was revealed to be The Vampire Diaries actress and singer Kat Graham. Kat had won the previous week’s round, but the Lambs dethroned her and moved on to the next episode, during which they will compete on ’90s Night. Only panelists Robin Thicke and Jenny McCarthy guessed Jerry correctly. Ken Jeong theorized that he might be Mike Myers, while Nicole Scherzinger thought he was Rowan Atkinson. Guest panelist Miss Piggy wondered if he was John Larroquette.

In an interview with EW, Jerry revealed why he wanted to join The Masked Singer, despite the fact that he does not consider himself a singer. Jerry said that he is “semi-retired now,” and his first reaction when The Masked Singer asked him to do the show was, “have they ever heard me sing? And who is this anyway? But I thought about it for a couple of days. I don’t think I said yes right away, but I thought about it a couple of days. And why not? It’s just fun.” The Masked Singer contestant shared that he thought that his grandson “would get a great kick out of this,” along with the rest of his family. He admitted that there was “no strategy to it. I’m not trying to build a career or anything, because this would be a career ender, anyway. My dad used to tell me be careful what the last thing you’re going to be remembered for is. So if it’s this appearance, if this is how it ends… [Laughs] But it wasn’t actually a hard decision at all.” Jerry added that he could not think of a reason not to do the show. He said it was fun, and he had the time to do it. He said, “it was just a couple of days, and everyone was just as nice as could be.”

Jerry Springer Admitted That He Had Some Masked Singer Misgivings

Despite the fact that his Masked Singer experience was so positive, Jerry did confess that the most difficult part was wearing the Beetle costume. He said that singing and moving around on the stage was a challenge because he could not see very well out of the costume because the big head kept moving and covering his eyes. Jerry was also worried about trying to remember the lyrics of the song because he could not see the prompter because of the costume. He added that he was hoping that he would not trip or fall of the stage. Jerry concluded by saying that he knew that he was not the best singer, saying, “I thought I would carry the tune but no one’s gonna be voting for me because I don’t have a great voice. But it was just fun to do.”

Although Jerry’s voice might not have been as strong as those of his fellow Masked Singer season 8 competitors Kat and the Lambs, he definitely is selling himself short. He delivered a solid performance, and his fans were thrilled to see him compete. He is one of many season 8 contestants who most likely would have made it further in a different season with a larger group and only one elimination per week. Jerry brought class and charm to Beetle.

The Masked Singer season 8 has had some incredible reveals so far. From William Shatner (Knight) to Gloria Gaynor (Mermaid), Montell Jordan (Panther) to The Brady Bunch brothers (the Mummies), the show has surprised and delighted fans with its extraordinary talent. Jerry as Beetle was another exciting and fun reveal that illustrates why The Masked Singer is one of the most unique and beloved reality competition shows.

The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
