A federal jury ruled in favor of the city of Jackson on Thursday in a wrongful termination lawsuit filed by a former public works official.Mary Carter served as deputy director of the Public Works Department until she was fired during the 2022 water crisis.Carter claims she was terminated after she gave an interview to the media about former Public Works Director Marlin King. The attorney for the city argued that Carter was fired because of her performance, not because of the interview.The jury said there wasn’t enough evidence to support Carter’s claim that she was fired out of retaliation. “It’s very disappointing. The mayor and his cronies won,” Carter said.Carter accused the city of First Amendment retaliation and was seeking compensation for her termination. Drew Martin, attorney for the city of Jackson, had little to say after the verdict.”We’ll just say we’re really pleased with the jury verdict. That’s all we’re going to say about it. We’re pleased,” Martin said.
