Summary

  • Netflix’s upcoming film Reptile features Justin Timberlake in a significant role and reunites ’90s stars Benicio Del Toro and Alicia Silverstone.
  • Del Toro and Silverstone previously worked together in the 1997 film Excess Baggage, and they were thrilled to reunite for Reptile.
  • Reptile promises to be a twisty, mind-bending thriller on Netflix’s end-of-the-year film roster.

Netflix’s new film Reptile cast Justin Timberlake in a considerable role but also features two major actors whose reunion adds additional star power to the upcoming movie. Reptile, set for release on October 6, 2023, is written and directed by Grant Singer and will serve as his feature-film directorial debut. Singer is known for his work in the music industry and has directed music videos for high-profile artists such as The Weeknd, Sam Smith, and Camila Cabello but will now try his hand at success with the new crime thriller, Reptile.

Although Singer’s expertise may fall within the music industry, his efforts on Reptile are assisted by cinema regulars. Reptile is largely co-written by The Trust director Benjamin Brewer, and in addition, its screenplay is co-written by the charismatic, ’90s legend, actor Benicio Del Toro. Del Toro, recognized for performances in cinema favorites from 1995’s The Usual Suspects to his more recent role in MCU movies as the hoarding antagonist The Collector, will also lead Reptile’s cast of characters alongside Justin Timberlake, Michael Pitt, Sky Ferreira, and one other actress he’s excitingly already had the pleasure of acting with before.

Reptile’s Benicio Del Toro & Alicia Silverstone Previously Worked Together In Excess Baggage

Benicio del Toro and Alicia Silverstone in Excess Baggage

Reptile reunited Del Toro with another prominent celebrity of the ’90s era – Clueless superstar, Alicia Silverstone. Once before, Del Toro and Silverstone managed to combine their star power for the 1997 film Excess Baggage, where Silverstone played a teenager named Emily who faked her kidnapping by locking herself in the trunk of a car, and Del Toro co-starred as the car thief Vincent who stole the vehicle unaware that she was inside. The action comedy was a critical and commercial failure despite having notable household names in the leads, but Silverstone and Del Toro will have another shot at impressing audiences side-by-side come the release of Netflix’s Reptile.

Both actors were reportedly excited to reunite on the set of Reptile and have spoken highly of one another in interviews that were recorded during production. According to Netflix, Del Toro was delighted to co-star with Silverstone and said, “It was great reconnecting with her…Alicia brought everything we wanted for the character and more.” Silverstone reciprocated with a fondness of their history and mentioned, “There’s a deep mutual respect and appreciation, so that makes it work well. I was honored that they asked me to do it and that he wanted to work with me again.”

Benicio Del Toro & Alicia Silverstone’s Roles In Reptile Explained

Benicio del Toro as Nichols in Reptile

Silverstone and Del Toro headlining on Reptile is an exciting prospect because it gives the two celebrities another opportunity to work together again, hopefully, with more success than Excess Baggage was able to afford them. But, also, having Del Toro and Silverstone’s names attached to the project beside celebrities like Justin Timberlake will be especially invigorating for Reptile as a debut film led by an up-and-coming film director. Singer’s directorial efforts will undoubtedly be complemented by having such influential stars functioning in Reptile’s lead roles.

Reptile’s latest trailer revealed Del Toro will play the main character Tom Nichols, a seasoned detective investigating the brutal murder of a real estate agent in an unassuming small town. In his attempts to unravel the truth of the unsettling case, Nichols will lean on the support of his wife Judy Nichols, played by Alicia Silverstone. Timberlake rounds out Reptile’s cast as the murder victim’s husband. Singer’s Reptile will bring its heavy-hitting performers together for what is expected to be a twisty, mind-bending thriller on Netflix’s anticipated end-of-the-year film roster.
