A group of local artists paired with volunteers are creating a sense of community at a local library.Saturday, community group JXN Friends of the Library painted a mural at the Margaret Walker Alexander Library Branch.Their goal: to bring beauty back to the branch.The group received a grant through the Mississippi Arts CommissionThe mural is inspired by Margaret Walker Alexander herself. Kateri Hill, a West Jackson contract artist, said, “It’s a place of education. People go to the library to print out resumes and do all sorts of things, and for me. It’s just investing in something that’s already invested in me.” The same group of volunteers also did extensive work inside of the library with books from the Eudora Welty library. The downtown Jackson library closed down, and the books from the branch were brought to the Margaret Alexander library. The group says the design mimics the repeated pattern of a strip quilt.
