AN AIRPLANE IS OUT OF COMMISSION AFTER BEING STRUCK WITH A BULLET MONDAY EVENING. PHYSICIANS AIR TRANSPORT LEAD PILOT DAVID HOOD SAYS HE GOT A SHOCKING CALL FROM A JUNIOR PILOT MONDAY EVENING. THE PILOT SAID HE WAS STANDING IN THE HANGAR ON THE PHONE WHEN HE HEARD A LOUD PING AS HE CHECKED OUT THE PLANE. HE FOUND A BULLET HOLE IN WHAT’S KNOWN AS THE UPPER COWLING. AFTER REMOVING THAT PIECE. THEY FOUND THE BULLET ALSO STRUCK A PART OF THE ENGINE. I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW SOMEBODY CAN DO THAT BECAUSE IT’S SO COUNTERPRODUCTIVE THAT THIS IS TAKEN OUT OF THE LOOP. WE NEED IT FOR TWO TO TAKE CARE OF FELLOW HUMANS. THIS 1993 BEECHCRAFT SERVED FOUR MEDICAL EMERGENCY SERVICES ANYWHERE IN THE US CANADA AND MEXICO. An airplane is grounded in Jackson after it was struck by a bullet.Physicians Air Transport lead pilot David Hood said he got a shocking call from a junior pilot at about 6:30 p.m. Monday. The pilot said he was standing in the hanger at Hawkins Field on the phone when he heard a loud ping. As he checked out the plane, he found a bullet hole in what’s known as the upper cowling. After removing that piece, they found the bullet also struck a part of the engine. “It’s unimaginable that such inconsideration could be taken that somebody could take a random shot at a man standing in a hanger and hit an airplane,” Hood said. “I’m glad he hit the airplane and not the man, but that it was fired at all, I don’t understand how someone could do that.”The 1993 Beechcraft flies emergency medical service missions anywhere in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Hood said it could cost $250,000 and take at least a week to get the plane back in the air.
