Bishnu Hari Ghimire was once a journalist in Nepal. He now serves others from his homeland who are living in the Susquehanna Valley region of Pennsylvania. One of the stories he’s working on is about a dance instructor who is well-known in Nepal but is in Lancaster to share her passion with a new generation. Dancers are learning for free thanks to a nonprofit that promotes Nepali culture. But now the focus was on Ghimire.”My English is not good because this is my second language,” he said.He moved to the U.S. from Nepal in 2014.He was a sports journalist in Nepal and found a need to tell stories in a new country.In 2020, he started his own online publication with a website, Facebook page and YouTube channel. He said in the first year, 300,000 people visited his website. He hopes to unite them. “You need to keep your culture also. If not, then your identity is gone. So, that’s the important thing,” he said.From the dance floor to the mats – one of Ghimire’s next stories will be at Everest World Class Taekwondo because the owner is from Nepal.However, not all of the stories have to do with sports. Some are more hard-hitting. “Even for me, I didn’t know who is the candidate in Lancaster. So, most people, they never vote in their life,” Ghimire said.He helped get the word out before the Pennsylvania primary and plans to continue through the general election. He creates both articles and videos, recognizing that some people from Nepal can speak the language but were never taught to read.He wants to help keep them informed in any way he can.”That’s my job, my dream and then my passion,” he said.Ghimire believes he’s the only media option for the Nepali community here in their language, and he hopes to grow his business.
