NEW YORK — Have you ever wondered why anyone would join the “Unification Church” or the “Moonies”?

You have probably heard us called a “cult.” Some people say we are “brainwashed.” (Is that even a legitimate thing?) But in spite of that, this movement has grown all over the world, attracting people from across cultures, nationalities, and races. Was it just people falling for a charismatic leader, or is there something more?

People call us the “Unification Church” but we’re more than that. We’re the church that’s not really a church. We’re a global movement. Our official name is the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification.

Listen in with us as we hear from people from all walks of life share their spiritual journeys and tell us Why I Joined. In Season One, we hear from guests such as a Fulbright Scholar and graduate of the Sorbonne, a retired U.S. Foreign Service Officer, a nursing student, a musician and spiritual songwriter, a former professional comedian, and many more.

…traveling to the mainland with a list of spiritual communities that I wanted to check out to find my space and find out where I wanted to be.” – Susan Bouachri, HR professional and licensed boat captain

…by the time I left there and headed off to France, I knew that things are not as easily explained as I thought.” – Dr. Thomas Ward, Fulbright Scholar and graduate of the Sorbonne

…this is a revelation from this man, Rev. Sun Myung Moon. At that moment, I was so struck, because as a scientist I wasn’t thinking of revelations.” – Mary Bizot Johnson, retired U.S. Diplomat

The Why I Joined podcast can be found on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
