However, 248 years after U.S. independence, many Americans are reportedly not feeling patriotic.”Patriotism is defined really broadly as feeling, pride, or love for one’s country,” said Elisabeth Anker, professor of American studies and political science at George Washington University.A Fox News poll released this week indicates that a majority of U.S. voters are not proud of their country today.According to Anker, much of how people feel about their country is tied to their political beliefs.”For instance, in the Democratic party, do you feel that the government is in the service of helping citizens?” Anker questioned.She further explained, “What we see in people in the Republican party, patriotism might be: is the U.S. the strongest country in the world?”Anker also pointed out another factor contributing to the decline in national pride – a generational shift.
