On this World Poetry Day, we travel back to the early ‘90s to visit a poet who took the path less traveled. Born in New York City and a creature of academia, Michael Carey picked up the plow for love.Carey’s wife asked him to help out on the family farm in Iowa after college. He helped with clearing and tilling the fields, planting crops and harvesting them, but his new responsibilities did not stunt his poetry. Carey said they helped his craft.He felt more connected to the earth and to himself. His poems, which he felt had grown stale in the “concrete jungle” of the city, took on new life.
