Here’s a look at promotions, hirings, movers and newsmakers in the Memphis area business scene:
Justin Joy, a shareholder in Lewis Thomason’s Memphis office, was elected recently to the 2022 Memphis Bar Association’s Board of Directors. Joy leads Lewis Thomason’s cybersecurity practice group and is the firm’s privacy officer. He provides counsel to clients in a variety of industries in the area of information privacy and cybersecurity including incident investigation and breach response management, regulatory compliance, privacy and security policy review and drafting, and cyber risk management. In the area of healthcare, Joy counsels covered entities and business associates on a variety of matters pertaining to HIPAA Privacy Rule, Security Rule and Breach Notification Rule compliance.
Keller Williams Memphis has partnered with Arlington-based Wallace Group Home & Loan as part of a merger finalized Dec. 15, marking Keller Williams’ entry into the rapidly expanding Memphis suburb. Bringing 26 real estate agents into its current operations, the merger increases the total local agent count to 390. Prior to the merger, Wallace Group Home & Loan served more than 371 clients in 2021.
Memphis Stone & Gravel, a leader in the aggregate industry, was awarded a Louis Griesemer Sterling Safety Award by the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association for safety merit. The company received the bronze designation within the medium size category for demonstration of safety excellence throughout the four wash plants in operation last year — DeSoto, North Plant, Perry and Fly. Created in 1994, the Louis Griesemer Sterling Safety Award recognizes companies that have the lowest total accident incidence rate for the previous year in their category among NSSGA members.
Michael Keeney has been selected as the chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. The sixth executive to hold the chairman’s title in the Airport Authority’s history was unanimously elected for a five-year term by board members at their Dec. 16 meeting. He succeeds Pace Cooper, whose term as chairman ended Dec. 31. Commissioners also selected Pamela Z. Clary, executive vice president and partner for Community Capital LLC, as vice chairwoman, and Jim Keras, president of Jim Keras Automotive Group in Memphis, as secretary. Keeney joined the MSCAA board in 2015. He has practiced law since 1993 and formerly served as the managing shareholder of the Memphis office of Lewis Thomason law firm. He earned his juris doctor from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
The Orpheum Theatre Group, the nonprofit organization operating the historic Orpheum Theatre and the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education, announced the addition of two new members to its Board of Directors. They are Miles Mason Sr., owner and founder of Miles Mason Family Law Group, and Kush Shah, partner and owner of DirectFX Solutions. Board members serve a three-year term and are eligible to serve two consecutive terms.
Forrest Artz, vice president of Finance/CFO for the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority (MSCAA), has announced his retirement effective Oct. 29, 2022. He joined MSCAA in 2008 and has 23 years of experience in the aviation industry. His leadership responsibilities have included managing MSCAA’s strategic business, preparing and monitoring the airport’s budget, and managing airline use and lease agreements. Artz oversees the Airport’s Procurement, Properties, Human Resources, Finance and IT departments. Before joining MSCAA, he served as deputy comptroller for the City of Chicago’s Aviation Department overseeing O’Hare International and Midway Airports’ financial activities for more than 10 years.
Realtors and employees of Crye-Leike Real Estate Services‘ West Tennessee and North Mississippi branch offices recently raised more than $7,000 to benefit the Blackwell Animal Rescue Center. A two-day auction and split-pot drawing was held at the Crye-Leike Memphis Quail Hollow office, where attendees were able to bid on items such as box seats for a Memphis Grizzlies game, tickets for a Tennessee Titans game, designer bags, real estate courses held by Success Real Estate School and more. Vicki Blackwell, managing broker of the Crye-Leike Olive Branch office, founded the nonprofit Blackwell Animal Rescue Center in 2014 to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abused and abandoned animals.
Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South, a nonprofit dedicated to helping K-12 students become world ready, in January 2023 will move into its new home in the heart of the city at 516 Tillman in Binghampton, the site of the former Save-A-Lot grocery store. The 16,000-square-foot facility will house two JA Capstone programs in addition to serving as community resource space. JA has signed a lease with the Binghampton Development Corp.
Wells Fargo in December announced $8.5 million in funding to support small businesses and advance economic recovery in the Delta and across the South. The company is providing flexible capital to Hope Enterprise Corporation (HOPE), a nonprofit and a certified Community Development Financial Institution based in Jackson, Mississippi, through an Open for Business Fund grant, and a patient capital loan to help people in rural and economically distressed areas access flexible, low-cost loans and financial services. HOPE received a $3.5 million Open for Business Fund grant earlier last year, and is using the funding to support a projected 200 small businesses and 2,000 jobs across the South, with a focus on businesses owned by people of color. Additionally, HOPE plans to use a $5 million patient capital loan as secondary capital for its credit union, providing access to low cost financial services in rural and underserved markets. HOPE serves low-income households and people of color in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.
