Rescue team responds to help pod of stranded whales off Cape Cod

Members of a wildlife rescue team are hoping a group of pilot whales is able to swim out to deeper waters after they became stranded off the coast of Chatham, Massachusetts.The International Fund for Animal Welfare said members of its Marine Mammal Rescue & Research team helped a pod of five whales that became stranded off the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday.The rescue team had to wait until the high tide came in late Saturday afternoon to try and get the whales safely back into the ocean.The IFAW said four of the pilot whales were able to be freed, but one of the whales, unfortunately, died.On Sunday, the IFAW said it received a report of one stranded pilot whale on a spit of land across from the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, at the southern team. The rescue team was responding to the area again to help free that whale.
