So…you’re moving to Sarasota, Florida. GREAT! Take my advice:
1. Develop a strategy. You must accept that the next hurricane WILL happen.
2. Are you getting out of town? How? When? To where?
3. Are you planning for a shelter? Think twice about shelters.
4. Do you know whether or to what degree your new home can or should hold up to a hurricane?
5. Even if your home is as hardened as possible, do you really believe you should stick around…when you’re so new to Florida?
National media enjoy “Florida Man or Woman” stories about holding hurricane parties and/or refusing to evacuate while holed up in a tiki hut. Truth is, every local I know over 36 years takes every tropical storm and hurricane seriously.
They like to throw around the word ‘paradise,’ but there is no paradise on earth. Locals must accept the good & great AND the bad & ugly.
