Stranger Things star Sadie Sink gives a small preview of Max’s journey in season 4 volume 2, saying she will have to “be braver than she’s ever been.”

Stranger Things star Sadie Sink teases that season 4 volume 2 will show more of Max’s fierce side. The Duffer Brothers’ sci-fi horror series follows a group of friends in Hawkins, Indiana, who face supernatural threats from the Upside Down. Stranger Things stars an ensemble cast that includes Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, Sink, and Joe Keery. The series is currently in its fourth season, with Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 due to be released on July 1.

Sink joined Stranger Things in season 2 as Max Mayfield, a tomboy and avid skateboarder who was quickly pulled into the fight against the Upside Down. Max has been one of the main focuses of Stranger Things season 4, as she is struggling to cope with the death of her brother Billy (Dacre Montgomery) during “The Battle of Starcourt.” Then, while still dealing with her grief, Max also became one of Vecna’s targets. She came perilously close to being one of his victims, until she and her friends learned how to resist Vecna in season 4 episode 4, “Dear Billy” by playing Max’s favorite Kate Bush song.

While Max may have escaped Vecna’s grasp for now, more danger is sure to come in Stranger Things season 4 volume 2. Sink shares with THR a preview of what volume 2 holds for Max, saying she has to “be braver than she’s ever been before.” The Stranger Things star adds that, although Max began to take control of her fate in “Dear Billy,” she will need to be even fiercer in the second part of the season. Check out Sink’s full comment below:

Max’s journey in Volume 2, I think, is about how she has to make some really brave choices. And she has already, but I think she has to really step up and be braver than she’s ever been before. So, that was a nice side of her to see; taking charge of her own life, her own fate and kind of taking a stand, which she’s always been good at, but this is to the extreme. So, it’s nice to see that fiercer side of her, which we caught kind of a glimpse of through the last bit of episode four when she’s choosing to fight. So I guess just a little bit more of that.

Although it is exciting for Sink to give fans a hint of what volume 2 will bring, her words may forewarn a dark ending to Stranger Things season 4. Max has already witnessed Billy’s death and faced down her own in Vecna’s Mind Lair, two situations that required extreme bravery to endure. For Sink to say that Max will push beyond that implies that she and her friends will face truly hopeless odds in their fight against Vecna. Perhaps, theories about the Upside Down consuming Hawkins will come true.

Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 is only two episodes long, but that doesn’t mean the fight against Vecna will be quick. Both episodes will be over an hour in length, with the finale reaching as long as a feature film. The extended episode lengths will give plenty of time both for disaster to strike and for Max to demonstrate her fierce bravery. Viewers will have to see how it all plays out when Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 premieres on July 1.
