Prime Video just dropped a British comedy-drama series to rave reviews by critics, and it could be the perfect replacement TV show for anyone looking to fill the void left by Hulu’s The Great. Upon release, The Great similarly garnered high critical praise, and throughout its short three-season run, it maintained itself in favor, as corroborated by its overall Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%. The Great cleverly reimagined the life and times of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia with a satirical and hilarious flair that made the series not only one to watch but seriously easy to binge.

Not to mention, The Great was perfectly cast, with Elle Fanning as the cunning Empress Catherine, Nicholas Hoult as the spoiled former ruler Peter III, and a complementary supporting ensemble including Phoebe Fox, Gwilym Lee, and Adam Godley. Yet, as much as the series had going for it, The Great was canceled in a shock decision that Hulu never confirmed the reason for but was likely due to inadequate viewership numbers. The Great’s cancellation may never be forgiven by some avid fans, but it can be mitigated by a new Prime Video series that shares a lot of commonalities.

Amazon’s My Lady Jane Is The Perfect Replacement For The Great

All Episodes Of My Lady Season 1 Are Available To Stream Now On Prime Video

Prime Video released My Lady Jane on June 27, and it has already made big waves for itself. On top of earning a 90% critics approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (just six percentage points under The Great’s average score), My Lady Jane has already shot to the no. 2 spot on Prime Video’s top 10 TV shows in the U.S. today (via Flix Patrol). All episodes of its first season are now available and follow the abruptly crowned Lady Jane Grey, who finds herself the target of enemies opposing her status as Queen of England.

The new series is adapted from Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows’ bestselling historical young adult novel of the same name, the first of the book series known as The Lady Janies. My Lady Jane’s cast brings the story to small screens with a naughty and, often, kooky edge, making for great laughs and scandalizing drama. Critics have praised how My Lady Jane has brought Hand, Ashton, and Meadows’ story to life, and it is exactly its premise that makes My Lady Jane the perfect replacement series for The Great.

Why My Lady Jane Will Appeal To Fans Of The Canceled Hulu Series

My Lady Jane Offers A Fun And Exuberant Alternate Account Of History

Peter smiling and Catherine clapping in The Great

Just as
The Great
puts a unique spin on Catherine the Great’s story,
My Lady Jane
does so with Lady Jane Grey.

The book and the new series are jam-packed with enough period drama, royal debauchery, and complicated power dynamics for any The Great fan to appreciate. However, My Lady Jane’s clever alternate perspective of history will keep The Great fans hooked. My Lady Jane’s leading character is based on the real-life English noblewoman Lady Jane Grey, also known as Lady Jane Dudley or the “Nine Days’ Queen,” who claimed the throne of England from July 10th to the 19th of 1553 before she was convicted of and executed for treason.

Lady Jane Grey was the great-granddaughter of Henry VII and daughter of Mary Tudor.

Just as The Great puts a unique spin on Catherine the Great’s story, My Lady Jane does so with Lady Jane Grey. Instead of having her succumb to execution, My Lady Jane gives Lady Jane Grey a second chance with witty revisionist storytelling through a feminist lens that imagines that she lived the fun life filled with love and adventure any young woman such as herself deserved. If The Great fans are looking for another cheeky anti-historical ride that tackles otherwise serious subjects, My Lady Jane is the surefire way to go.
