WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Get Fury #1Long-term Punisher writer Garth Ennis has returned to the character, as Frank Castle gears up for his darkest mission yet: head behind enemy lines to assassinate none other than Nick Fury. Get Fury #1 starts things off with a slow burn, but sets up an explosive confrontation between two of Marvel’s most dangerous and deadly characters.

Coming from the creative team of Garth Ennis, Jacen Burrows, Guillermo Ortego, Nolan Woodard and Rob Steen, Get Fury #1 finds Captain Frank Castle in 1971 in the thick of the conflict in Vietnam. Castle is summoned by military intelligence officials with a dilemma.

Frank Castle gets his mission parameters in Get Fury #1

Colonel Nick Fury has been taken prisoner by the Viet Cong, and given his operational knowledge of all military activity in the country, the big brass is worried that he’ll compromise their activity. With no way to rescue the colonel in time, it’s decided that the best course of action is to assassinate Fury before he’s interrogated.

Get Fury #1 Frank Castle is assigned to kill Nick Fury

You’re considered to be the best shot currently in country,” one of the CIA operatives explains to Castle, emphasizing that – officially – the mission doesn’t exist. “There’ll be no orders cut,” he tells Castle. “No paper trail.” It’s a scene that is likely meant to evoke the opening scenes of Apocalypse Now, where Martin Sheen’s Willard is given orders to assassinate Marlon Brando’s Col. Kurtz. Given that pedigree, the creative team is setting up their own Heart of Darkness-esque scenario for Castle and Fury, as the two grizzled soldiers come to blows in the jungles of Vietnam.

The story of
Get Fury
is narrated by Letrong Giap, a North Vietnamese general created by Garth Ennis and Goran Parlov who first appeared in 2012’s
Fury: MAX
#3.

It’s important to note that all of Garth Ennis’ Punisher stories done for the MAX line take place in the same continuity, from Castle’s time in the Vietnam War to his crusade as the Punisher much later on. Frank runs across Nick Fury several times through this continuity, as the two first meet in Garth Ennis and Goran Parlov’s Fury: My War Gone By. Given that Nick Fury later shows up in the 2004-2009 Punisher MAX series set in the then-present day, it’s safe to assume that Castle won’t be successful in his mission of assassinating Nick Fury during the Vietnam conflict, but anything’s possible.

The Punisher & Nick Fury Face Their Own Heart of Darkness in Get Fury

Get Fury #1 Letrong Giap tells the story of Nick Fury

Ennis’ work on both the Punisher and Fury MAX series has been marked by brutal violence and murky morality, with a keen eye towards historical accuracy when portraying both characters’ time in Vietnam. Paired with Jacen Burrows’ elegant line and clean storytelling, Get Fury continues the high bar already set in this dark corner of Marvel Comics, leading to an exciting and darkly compelling tale between Ennis’ two signature characters. Any time Garth Ennis returns to the Punisher and Nick Fury is cause for celebration, and Get Fury looks to be one of the writer’s best stories yet.
