The sinking of the SS Sultana in 1865 remains one of the most tragic and least remembered disasters in American history. What led to this catastrophic event?

Just days after the end of the Civil War, the SS Sultana was transporting over 2,400 passengers—mostly Union soldiers returning home—up the Mississippi River. The steamboat was severely overcrowded, carrying more than six times its legal capacity. On April 27, near Memphis, Tennessee, the Sultana’s boilers exploded due to a lethal combination of poor maintenance and overloading. The explosion ripped through the wooden ship, quickly followed by a devastating fire.

As the ship sank, many passengers were trapped by the fire or drowned in the cold river waters. The disaster killed over 1,800 people, making it the deadliest maritime disaster in U.S. history, yet it was overshadowed in the news by the recent assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and the end of the Civil War.

The sinking led to changes in steamboat safety regulations, but the lessons from the tragedy remain a stark reminder of the dangers of overcrowding and inadequate safety practices.
