BOOM! Studios Delivering Throwback to Vintage Horror Serialization

This brings me back to Tales from the Crypt and the other horror comics I devoured as a kid.

Scheduled to begin in July, this horror anthology will have a new Something is Killing the Children story that will span the first six issues. Within the first seven, there will be a serialized story from Garth Ennis and Becky Cloonan. According to Boom! Studios, “Everything from primal fears to modern political horrors will be explored in the classic style of Creepy and Eerie and the Contemporary Chills of Black Mirror.” Additionally, readers can expect cover art from Paolo Rivera (mains), Jenny Frison (variants), and guest variant cover artists for every issue in the series.

With Hello Darkness, BOOM! Studios is doing a modern take on classic horror magazines that began serializing in the 1960s. BOOM! is diving into this vintage publication style from a modern lens of storytelling with all-star creators ready to bring back these types of serialized thrills and chills in the comic book style readers love. Instead of one story and a backup, the issues will contain several short horror comics from several of the best minds in the medium today. This series is also opening up venues for new creative partnerships.

Hello Darkness’ creators revealed their thoughts on the upcoming comic anthology. R.L. Stine says, “This brings me back to Tales from the Crypt and the other horror comics I devoured as a kid. I’m so excited to be part of this anthology series designed to make the world a scarier place!” Francesco Francavilla also revealed his excitement about working with Stine:

I’ve been a fan of R.L. Stine and his work (Goosebumps, Fear Street, etc.) for some time and I’ve been a fan of all horror things my whole life. So I’m very excited to be joining creative forces with him for a brand new scary tale for BOOM!’s new anthology. Can’t wait for you all to embark on this spine-chilling journey with us!

Regarding the upcoming Something is Killing the Children story, James Tynion IV says, “My whole careers started writing comic short, so it’s very exciting to bring it all around full circle and tell a SIKTC story in that format. The story Werther and I are going to be telling here is one that’s been in the back of my mind for almost five years, and I’m thrilled we finally have the perfect platform to bring that story to readers.

Hello Darkness #1 will be available on July 24 from BOOM! Studios.
