Civil War battle impacted 4th of July in River City

Vicksburg has an interesting history when it comes to celebrating Independence Day.It was not until the end of World War II in 1945 that the River City celebrated the holiday with the rest of the country.On July 4, 1863, General John C. Pemberton surrendered Vicksburg to the Union during the Civil War.Because of the 47-day siege during the Battle of Vicksburg, the city and military occupation that followed the 4th of July was not widely celebrated by the city with deep roots in the Confederacy.Ward 1 Alderman TJ Mayfield said, “If you just look at the history and everything that Vicksburg has been through, the Civil War, for us to come together as a community and celebrate together with under America, you know, under the American flag, I think it’s something that a lot of people are proud of.”For America’s 248th Independence Day, the city of Vicksburg is holding a fireworks extravaganza featuring food and music.
