With Warner Brothers working on a new Lord of the Rings movie in the near future, this news has possibly destroyed the future of Rings of Power.
The Rings of Power may have potentially just been destroyed by Warner Bros. Set in Middle-earth, The Rings of Power isn’t in the same time period as Lord of the Rings. The Rings of Power focuses on a lesser-known period of Middle-earth history, one that Tolkien explored The Silmarillion, which is the blueprint for The Rings of Power‘s timeline. The latter is set around a thousand years before the events narrated in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings even happened. In fact, The Rings of Power is set in Middle-earth’s Second Age, whereas both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are set entirely in the Third Age.
It seems that Warner Bros. wants to take advantage of the success and fame of the Lord of the Rings franchise once again, even if this may affect the future and success of Amazon’s Rings of Power, however. The studio announced its intention of making one more Lord of the Rings film. In fact, not only does Warner Brothers intend on making a new Lord of the Rings movie, but it also seems to be set in a similar time frame to the much-beloved Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. This could be bad news for Rings of Power.
New LOTR Movies Are A Huge Blow To Rings Of Power
As mentioned, Warner Brothers and New Line are reportedly working on a new film related to Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, building upon the success and love for Tolkien’s saga. It is, therefore, likely going to be a film set in a similar timeframe. Therefore, Warner Brothers is going back to the third age, which was already explored in the previous Warner Brothers Lord of the Rings franchise. If Warner Brothers wants to emulate the success Lord of the Rings had, followed of course by The Hobbit series, it does make sense that it would set a further Lord of the Rings movie in the same period.
While The Rings of Power is set in another time period, exploring the second age, the new Warner Brothers film will be a direct competition to Rings of Power season two. This news is a huge blow to The Rings of Power as that is a series of high production value. In fact, The Rings of Power has been trying to establish itself not only as a media product of its own but also within the Lord of the Rings universe. Moreover, being produced by a different studio compared to the Lord of the Rings films, it represented a huge bet for Amazon.
What The New Lord Of The Rings Movies Can Be About
Given the ending of Lord of the Rings, viewers cannot be sure what the next film focused on the Lord of the Rings timeline could focus on. As Tolkien himself gave up writing another story set in the third age, the possible Lord of the Rings sequel never actually happened. So far, nothing more has been announced regarding the plot of the future Lord of the Rings, but one thing that is for sure is that it will most likely not be based on any of Tolkien’s other works, such as The Silmarillion, which has been the inspiration for The Rings of Power.
What is certainly an interesting possibility is that of focusing on certain specific characters. Given the abundance of characters and stories in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books, it is entirely possible that a new Lord of the Ring movie may focus on one of those characters. While this may entail much-beloved and well-known characters like Aragorn or Legolas, the new Lord of the Rings film may choose to focus on lesser-known side characters or even those characters from the books that were not present in the films.
