The basic premise that what happens in one hero’s solo-outings can impact all the others means that certain story arcs get planned out in advance, and that a project being filmed could potentially build on plot points that audiences are several movies or shows away from learning about.

This has famously resulted in the studio becoming extremely protective of their scripts, with various actors having described the intensity of Marvel’s MCU secrecy controls. With security presence locking things down on set, performers face their greatest tests while doing press, when they often have to promote a project without really being able to talk about it. Some MCU stars have taken well to this requirement, while others have struggled to keep such info entirely to themselves, most famously Spider-Man star Tom Holland.

Now, fans who have long wondered what the actual consequences of dropping Marvel spoilers are have their answer. During a Reddit AMA, Marvel Studios’ former lead production attorney Paul Sarker says revealing secrets would be a breach of contract, which could open them up to being sued for damages. While the exact dollar amount would be hard to pin down without real-world specifics, Sarker says, it would undoubtedly be a massive headache. Check out the response below:

While Marvel fans can surely think of a few instances of actors sharing spoilers off the top of their heads, such as Mark Ruffalo livestreaming Thor: Ragnarok audio by accident, none of these stars have found themselves served with lawsuits as a result. Kevin Feige & Co. can choose whether to pursue legal action, and while it helps that Holland and Ruffalo’s slips were genuine accidents, Marvel Studios also had a genuine interest in keeping the MCU’s Peter Parker and Bruce Banner in the franchise. Suing someone for breach of contract, with all the damages and legal fees that would entail, would pretty much spell the end of the working relationship.

So far, most instances of Marvel actors revealing MCU spoilers have actually worked out in the studio’s favor, as they drum up extra publicity and the fanbase approaches stars like Holland and Ruffalo with a lot of goodwill. The Thor: Ragnarok incident, for example, ended with Feige hugging the Hulk actor the next day, as his gaffe created more press than any of their strategic marketing. It’s obviously not the preferred situation, though, which is why Ms. Marvel‘s Iman Vellani promised Feige she wouldn’t be another Holland for the studio to deal with.
