Iain Armitage watches The Big Bang Theory in preparation for Young Sheldon season 6. The CBS comedy is currently on its summer break, but the cast and crew will eventually return to begin production for new episodes. Before that, Armitage, who plays Sheldon, has been brushing up on old episodes of TBBT in preparation.
Capitalizing on the popularity of The Big Bang Theory, CBS greenlit the show’s first and only spin-off in 2017. As Young Sheldon‘s title implies, the prequel series revolves around the titular character’s childhood in Texas, before he settled in Pasadena with his friends and wife Amy. Throughout the original geek-centric sitcom’s 12-year-run, members of the Cooper family sometimes paid Sheldon a visit, establishing the clan long before they were introduced again in Young Sheldon. Among all of Sheldon’s relatives, his mother Mary not only was the first one to make a cameo on The Big Bang Theory, she also appeared the most.
In a new behind-the-scenes image shared by Armitage on Twitter, the actor is watching an episode of The Big Bang Theory that features the older iterations of Sheldon and Mary, played by Jim Parsons and Laurie Metcalf. In the caption, the actor describes this as him “doing some research” as the start of work for Young Sheldon season 6 nears. Check out the image below:

Mary appeared a handful of times on The Big Bang Theory, but this particular episode is from season 5, titled “The Rhinitis Revelation.” In the episode, which originally aired in October 2011, the Cooper matriarch visits Pasadena before boarding her Christian cruise, the “Born Again Boat Ride.” Sheldon is initially thrilled to see his mom, but Mary is more interested in hanging out with the Pasadena gang, which infuriated the socially-inept genius. In this particular The Big Bang Theory scene, Sheldon and Mary were bickering about doing the laundry when Penny came in and distracted the Cooper matriarch to her son’s disappointment.
It’s curious if Armitage is hinting at a potential Young Sheldon season 6 plotline with this image or if it just so happened that this was The Big Bang Theory episode that was on at the time. In any case, considering how the boy genius is rapidly aging, perhaps the child actor is already gearing up to pick out other mannerisms from his older counterpart. Based on the season 5 finale, it seems like instead of focusing on Sheldon and Mary’s relationship, season 6 of the prequel will focus more on George as he nears his death, so it’s possible the young actor is preparing for an emotionally charged season.
