WE’RE BACK WITH SPORTS AND WE HAVE THE BIG STORY OF THE DAY. TAMIKA REED, ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL COACHES IN ANY SPORT IN JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY HISTORY, IS NOW LEAVING TO TAKE OVER THE CHARLOTTE 40 NINERS PROGRAM. >> COACH MAYBERRY’S. >> TAMIKA REED WAS INTRODUCED AS THE JSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH IN APRIL OF 2018. THE MURRAY NATIVE WILL GO ON TO BUILD A DOMINANT PROGRAM. COACH REED NEVER HAD A LOSING SEASON IN SIX YEARS. AMONG THE HIGHLIGHTS, EIGHT TOTAL SWAC CHAMPIONSHIPS AND TWO TIMES THE TIGERS WENT UNDEFEATED IN THE SWAC. SHE COACHED AND DEVELOPED TWO WNBA DRAFT PICKS IN THE LAST THREE SEASONS, AND THE TIGERS PLAYED IN THREE NCAA TOURNAMENT GAMES. IN HER FINAL YEAR, JSU WON A RECORD 26 GAMES. NOW SHE WILL TAKE OVER THE CHARLOTTE 40 NINERS PROGRAM AFTER WINNING HER THIRD SWAC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP IN MARCH, COACH REED REFLECTED ON HER TIME AT JSU. >> I NEVER SOUGHT OUT FOR MY NAME TO BE, YOU KNOW, AT THE TOP WITH ALL THE BIG NAMES I JUST WANTED. I JUST WANTED TO TURN THE PROGRAM AROUND. I WANTED TO TURN THE PROGRAM AROUND. THAT HAD BEEN FAILING THE PROGRAM. I’VE SEEN A LOT OF SUCCESS. YOU KNOW, PREVIOUSLY, AND I JUST WANTED TO GET IT BACK TO WHERE IT WAS AND NEVER DID. I THINK IT WOULD BE LIKE IT IS RIGHT NOW, YOU KNOW, AND I’M JUST EXTREMELY THANKFUL. AND IT FEELS GREAT TO BE ABLE TO DO IT IN THE CITY IN WHICH I WAS RAISED. I GREW UP LOOKING AT JACKSON STATE, YOU KNOW, AS A KID. I GREW UP LISTENING TO THE BOOM. I GREW UP AT THE BASKETBALL GAMES, THE FOOTBALL GAMES AND TO NOW TO BE CONSIDERED AMONGST THE GREATS. I WILL FOREVER LOVE MY HBCU. I PROMISE TO GIVE BACK AS MUCH AS I CAN. AND LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE BIG ACCOMPLISHMENTS COACH REED HAS HAD DURING HER TENURE AT JSU. FIVE SWAC REGULAR SEASON TITLES, THREE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIPS, THREE NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES, APPEARANCES IS. SHE’S A FOUR TIME SWAC COACH OF THE YEAR AND A THREE TIME HBCU NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR. SHE COACHED 22 ALL CONFERENCE PLAYERS AS WELL. HOW ABOUT THIS A 95 AND TEN RECORD IN THE SWAC, AND REED IS INHERITING A 40 NINERS PROGRAM THAT HAS BEEN USED TO WINNING AS WELL. THEIR LAST LOSING SEASON WAS IN 2017. THEY WENT TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT BACK IN 2022. KARA CONSUEGRA WAS THE HEAD COACH FOR 12 YEARS. SHE WON 225 GAMES. SHE’S NOW AT MARQU

Jackson native and JSU women’s basketball head coach Tomekia Reed will go down as one of the greatest coaches in program history. From the SWAC Championships, NCAA Tournaments and WNBA Draft picks she left her mark not only at Jackson State but in the SWAC and the HBCU women’s basketball landscape. Now she takes her talents to Charlotte to lead the 49ers program but she had legendary run at Thee I Love. Reed finishes with a 125-54 overall record and 95-10 mark in the SWAC.She led the Tigers to 5 straight SWAC regular season titles, three conference tournament championships and three NCAA tournament appearances. She is also a four-time SWAC Coach of the Year and three time HBCU National Coach of the Year.
