Bass Reaves became the first black deputy US Marshal west of the Mississippi River. He was born into slavery in Crawford County, Arkansas in 1938 but fled north into Indian Territory to seek freedom. The 6’2” master of disguise was famous among criminals for his skills, relentless pursuit, and fearless demeanor.
Reeves worked for 32 years as a federal peace officer in Arkansas and Oklahoma, arresting over 3000 felons. After retirement, the legendary lawman’s health began to fail and he died of Bright’s disease in 1910. Reeves was married to Nellie Jennie from Texas and they had 11 children. The African American cowboy who actually rode a silver horse is believed to have inspired the “Lone Ranger”.
