Chris Evans reveals that he apologized to Josh Brolin’s dad, his Lightyear co-star James Brolin, for beating Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

Chris Evans apologized to Josh Brolin’s dad, James Brolin, for defeating Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. It has been more than three years since the Infinity Saga culminated and while the Marvel Cinematic Universe moves forward with Phase 4, the 2019 Joe and Anthony Russo-directed Endgame remains a favorite for fans to revisit. The film features a lot of iconic moments for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and, of course, the fall of the Mad Titan Thanos after an epic battle.

In the years since the release of the MCU blockbuster, some of its stars have moved on with other endeavors outside the superhero movie sandbox. For Evans, that includes his villainous outing in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out and an upcoming reunion project with the Russo Brothers in The Gray Man. Right now, he’s busy promoting Pixar’s Lightyear, where he voices the actual Buzz Lightyear that inspired Andy’s toy in the Toy Story films. In the animated project, he faces off against Zurg, voiced by James Brolin, and the pair had a very interesting first encounter as they talked about Josh Brolin’s Thanos.

In a new interview with Fandom as part of the press junkets for Lightyear, Evans shares his experience meeting James Brolin during the Pixar film’s premiere. Apparently, he had to apologize to the actor for taking down his son in Avengers: Endgame. Read Evans’ quote below:

I met James [Brolin] last night, for the first time in the premiere and told him ‘sorry, had to kick your son’s a**.’ I mean I guess technically he beat me up a little bit, he might have won the battle, but we won the war.

Buzz and Zurg in Lightyear

Throughout Evans’ marketing schedule for Lightyear, questions about his MCU stint have popped up occasionally. When asked about his thoughts on reprising his role as Captain America, he was intentionally vague with his answer. But he has been clear that he supports Anthony Mackie as the new Star-Spangled Avenger. Ever since he retired from his Avenger duties in Endgame, there have been multiple rumors that he could make a return to the franchise. If his answers are any indication, however, it’s safe to say that he has no plans of doing so in the foreseeable future. In any case, considering how he was written out of the MCU, there’s always a way to easily bring him back if ever Marvel Studios’ storytelling needs Captain Rogers.

As for Evans’ encounter with the older Brolin, the fact that they met the first time during the Lightyear premiere shouldn’t surprise anyone. Animated films tend to do voice recordings separately for their actors. That being said, it’s funny that the topic of Thanos’ defeat in Avengers: Endgame was one of their first conversations. And now, with the release of Lightyear, Evans will have officially faced off against two generations of Brolins on film.
