The Walking Dead: Dead City spinoff finally reveals its premiere date on AMC. The original Walking Dead series may have wrapped up its run on AMC in 2022, but the TWD universe will continue on through three new spinoffs focused on iconic Walking Dead characters. The first of those new spinoffs centers on Lauren Cohan’s Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan, and sees that unlikely duo teaming up to embark on a mission to a zombie-infested New York City to rescue Maggie’s kidnapped son Hershel.

It was previously revealed that Dead City (formerly titled Isle of the Dead) would premiere at some point in June 2023. Now at last AMC has released a definitive premiere date for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1, announcing at today’s TWD WonderCon panel that Maggie and Negan’s new adventure will debut on June 18, 2023, right after Fear the Walking Dead’s mid-season finale.

Dead City Can Finally Kill Off Negan (But Will It?)

The Walking Dead set up Negan as the ultimate big bad when the villainous character killed fan-favorites Abraham and Glenn in quick succession. It might have seemed then that Negan was destined to meet his own demise, possibly at the hands of Glenn’s wife Maggie, but TWD had other plans. Clearly seeing Negan as a core character who could not be killed off, TWD’s brain-trust kept him alive, teasing fans with the possibility that Maggie would eventually be allowed to gain vengeance on the man who brutally murdered her husband.

It’s still possible that Maggie will finally get her revenge on Negan, but this will not happen until after the pair go off on an adventure together to New York City, with the aim of rescuing Maggie’s son Hershel from unknown enemies. The question is, once Negan has outlived his usefulness to Maggie, will she finally put Negan down and get justice for Glenn? Or will Negan fully redeem himself in Maggie’s eyes, earning the right to continue living and raising his own family with Annie?

Teaming mortal enemies Maggie and Negan may seem awkward and strange in some ways, but in other ways it may be perfect. It remains to be seen how exactly The Walking Dead: Dead City will play out Maggie and Negan’s gruesome odd couple arc when it hits AMC.
