Summary

  • Neil Gaiman is taking time to develop Good Omens season 3, which points to maintaining quality and avoiding a rushed ending, ensuring a satisfying closure.
  • Season 3 has to address Aziraphale’s new role, Crowley’s feelings, and the Metatron’s possible villainy.
  • Good Omens season 3 might not arrive until 2026, continuing the pattern of longer waits between seasons for better development.

An update on Good Omens season 3 reveals the show is continuing a disappointing trend seen with the previous seasons, but it’s for the better. In 2019, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s 1990 novel Good Omens was brought to life as a miniseries for Amazon Prime. Starring Michael Sheen as angel Aziraphale and David Tennant as demon Crowley, Good Omens was so well-received that it was renewed for a second season. Now, after the success of season 2, Good Omens is preparing for its third and final season.

Good Omens season 2 reunited viewers with Aziraphale and Crowley after they successfully prevented the apocalypse in season 1. The angel and demon had to team up again when archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) went missing, and both Heaven and Hell were looking for him. To their surprise, Gabriel arrived at Aziraphale’s bookshop, naked and with no memory of who he was, and Aziraphale and Crowley soon discovered some huge secrets in Heaven and Hell. Good Omens season 2 ended on a major cliffhanger and the wait for season 3 is going to be a long one – but this will be for the benefit of the series.

Good Omens Season 3 Is Following A Pattern

Good Omens season 2 shocked Aziraphale

Neil Gaiman revealed he’s currently writing the third season and that it will start shooting in January.

Good Omens was renewed for a third and final season in December 2023, but no updates were given after that. Now, speaking to Deadline, Gaiman offered an update on the development of Good Omens season 3, and unfortunately, it’s following the pattern of the previous seasons. Gaiman revealed he’s currently writing the third season and that it will start shooting in January. Gaiman didn’t share more about Good Omens season 3 nor why it will take so long to start filming, and while it’s disappointing that the wait for the final season will be long, it’s actually good for the show’s final episodes.

Good Omens’ quality is, in part, thanks to Gaiman and company not rushing the development of the series.

Good Omens has been praised for its faithfulness to the novel, the performances of Sheen and Tennant, Gaiman and John Finnemore’s writing, and more, and its quality is, in part, thanks to Gaiman and company not rushing the development of the series. Good Omens season 1 started filming in 2017 and was released in 2019, while season 2 began filming in 2021 and was released in 2023. Looking at this, it’s not surprising that Good Omens season 3 will take so long to arrive, and seeing how production and post-production of the past seasons went, season 3 might not arrive until 2026, at the earliest.

What Good Omens Season 3 Needs To End The Series

Good Omens Season 2 Left Many Questions

Good Omens season 3 not only has to give closure to the romance between Aziraphale and Crowley, but it has to address the Metatron’s plans and role in Heaven.

Gaiman and company taking their time to develop Good Omens season 3 is necessary after the surprising events of season 2. Good Omens season 2 revealed that Gabriel and Hell’s Beelzebub (now played by Shelley Conn) are in love, and they left their respective roles in Heaven and Hell to continue their romance. This left a spot open in the high rankings of Heaven, and the Metatron offered the role of Supreme Archangel to Aziraphale, who, after some hesitation, accepted it.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t convince Crowley to join him in Heaven and make him an angel again, so even though Crowley came clean about his feelings for Aziraphale, the latter still chose his new role in Heaven. The ending of Good Omens season 2 also hinted at the Metatron possibly being a villain in disguise, so season 3 not only has to give closure to the romance between Aziraphale and Crowley, but it has to address the Metatron’s plans and role in Heaven and how Hell is doing now with Shax in charge.

Good Omens season 3 has a lot to cover and answer to give satisfying closure to its characters and biggest storylines, so the long wait, while disappointing, is also exciting and a big relief, as it almost guarantees that it won’t be a rushed ending.
