But Taiwan is not a pushover. It ranks 24th on the global firepower index, ahead of NATO members like Sweden and Canada. The island’s defence spending rose 5% annually under the previous president and now stand at 2.5% of the national GDP. An invasion of the island would also require China to ferry tens of thousands of soldiers across the choppy waters of the Taiwan strait, an operation that could last days.
