Macy’s Star Rewards points turn into Macy’s Star Money that can be spent on anything at Macy’s (except for gift cards, services and fees). It’s basically a future cash discount.
- Once you earn 1,000 points, Macy’s sends you $10 in Star Money.
- The cool thing about Star Money is you can use it on top brands, beauty and designers that rarely go on sale.
- Macy’s Star Money expires 30 days after the day it’s issued. If you want to use your Star Money reward online to purchase furniture or a mattress, you’ll need to call Macy’s Customer Service.
2. Sign up for Macy’s Email and Text Discounts
When you sign up to receive Macy’s emails, you’ll always know what’s around the corner and when the next sale is coming down the pike. Plus, you’ll receive 25% off your first purchase. Macy’s also offers extra savings, like 20% off for no special reason at all, and signing up will get you a notification of these moments.

3. Shop Regular Macy’s Sales
These sales are the most frequent ones to shop at Macy’s.
Macy’s One Day Sales
Macy’s One Day Sale events typically run for 48 hours and, in the past, have taken place each month. However, the dates aren’t set in stone and the days of the week change. Sometimes, the preview day is Wednesday with the shopping day on Thursday (but you can still make purchases on the preview day). We’ve also seen them run from Friday through Saturday.
A Macy’s One Day Sale offers deep discount opportunities. You’ll want to watch for them if, for example, you want to score an extra 50% off clearance sportswear and handbags, 75% off clearance shoes, and 65% off luggage — you get the idea. This is when the magic dust gets sprinkled throughout the store.
Macy’s Flash Sales
Macy’s Flash Sales are exactly what the name says. They’re only available to shop online and last for 24 hours only, but they do pop up more frequently. Deal categories can range from homeware to formalwear, with savings of up to 70%.
Macy’s Clearance Sales
Like most retailers, the time to get the best deal on something is when a store prepares to change the merchandise to the next season. Macy’s, however, is a little earlier and more aggressive in discounting at the end of a season. You’ll want to keep these dates in mind:

Although the dates of the Macy’s Friends & Family sale used to be fairly consistent — with one in April and the other in December — starting last year, Macy’s began giving us not two but three Friends & Family sales in a year. To shop online, you’ll need the promo code associated with that particular Friends & Family sale event, which you can find online, on the Macy’s app, via text message, via email and a variety of other ways (once you’re dialed into the Macy’s system).
Remember, this sale is a big deal, and you don’t want to miss it. During the Macy’s Friends & Family sale, you’ll find a promo code for 30% off all regular, sale, and clearance prices—and often, an extra 15% off or more in select departments.
Macy’s Semi-Annual Sales
Another sale you shouldn’t miss is the Macy’s semiannual Sale. It circles around each January and July, coinciding with the end of two major seasons: winter and summer. Shopping the semiannual events is a superb way to take advantage of markdowns on seasonal items. For example, buying outdoor furniture at the July Macy’s Semi-Annual Sale will save you big bucks. Likewise, buying holiday décor or jewelry during Macy’s semiannual sale in January is a good strategy.
Macy’s Black Friday Sale
Typically, when someone mentions Black Friday, we think of November, right? However, you’ll also find a pretty serious Macy’s Black Friday in July sale, where we’ve seen 30% to 75% off bedding, 50% off outdoor patio furniture, 60% off gadgets and cookware, and a set of luggage reduced from $249 to just $59.99.
You’ll want to keep the July event top of your list as you do the typical Macy’s Black Friday sale in November during the holiday season. Each Macy’s Black Friday event delivers fantastic deals, but the best part is the sales are very different. Don’t miss either.
Macy’s Black Friday 2024
In 2023, the Macy’s Black Friday sale started with a Black Friday Early Access event from Nov. 10 to 18, 2023, followed by even more Black Friday specials from Nov. 19 to 25, 2023. Stores were closed on Thanksgiving but opened at 6 a.m. on Black Friday, a trend we expect to continue in 2024.

5. Watch for the Next Macy’s Money Event
Shopping during a Macy’s Money Event makes it easy to make $10 bucks. It’s a simple promotion that goes like this: Shop during the dates of the event, spend $50, get $10 in Macy’s Money; spend $100, get $20 in Macy’s Money; spend $150, get $30 in Macy’s Money; or spend $200, get $40 in Macy’s Money. You’re issued Macy’s Money rewards cards right at the register, so you’ll have them to use the following week.

Macy’s accepts most returns by mail and in stores within 90 days of purchase for free (one exception is an electronic purchase, which must be returned within 14 days).
